Telephoto lens help

I'm looking for a telephoto lens and cant decided what to get.I have a canon t3i (600d) and a cheap tripod. Looking for a lens in the 70-300mm range. My price range is low, only looking to spend around $500. I want to use it for filming surfing and skiing. I seen the tamron 70-300mm f4-5.6 VC looks like a good cheap lens, not sure how it handles filming (test shots I've seen look poor). Or should I spend the extra money and get the canon 70-200mm f4? Also is it hard to get a stable shot with the canon 70-200 f4 without IS? Open for other advice.

I have the tamron 70-300 and its a great sharp lens. I don't regret buying it at all. Would highly recommend itb

For the price it's a very decent performer, if you can get stable shots without IS depends entirely on the conditions and your grip. It's a FF designed lens so with an APS-C your looking through the better middle part resulting in decent sharpness, little distortion, CA, uggo Bokeh though. Go to a local shop and try it out, is the 70-200 L better? Yes.

Is it worth the extra cash? That's something only you can decide. I'd go for the L if you can, and not only because it's sexy and white, it's the better lens.

It's about as sharp as my thumb when it tries to cut onions. For it's price: good, in relative terms: nothing remarkable.

I've tried multiple lenses (telephotos and it's the sharpest lens I've used. Sure it's not as sharp as a lens that is $1200 and up. But for ops price range I think it's a great option.

Save for a new tripod first, shooting > 100mm on a shitty tripod is gonna look like shit no matter what lens you put on your camera.

thanks for the advice guys, im going to look into renting the canon 70-200 f4 and see how it handles
