They are an utter pain in the balls to keep in really good shape.
I used to build the one at High North, and we had to hand cut almost the whole thing every single fucking morning... only to keep it open for 2 hours until it was destroyed.
Even the 22' pipe cutters can't get the tranny right for hitting it straight on, its too tight. You can make it work, but you can't boost the fuck out of it like you want to.
They're great for shoots, but maintaining one is almost simply just unrealistic.
probably due to being alot harder to maintain, i mean 1 or 2 days and its not a quarter pipe anymore unless they lug the pipe cutter all the way out to cut one wall. but i agree more qp please!

This.
and QP's in public parks get fucked even faster because 90% of the public has no idea how to ride a QP.
cabdrivertheres a real lack of qp's and hips in parks these days. nothing I love like a fat mute on a hip. wish I got to hit this
Most of the time on a big hip to get the landing right you literally have no other option but to get 20 guys to hand cut the entire thing with shovels, and you can't maintain it after it gets beat up.

they don't have to be perfect landings though. I've never seen the landing of a hip so beat up I was uncomfortable hitting it.

agreed completely, hips are the shit and they don't have to even be in great shape to hit. plus the same hip, if it's big enough, can provide fun for a 10 year old and a pro in the same day cause you can choose how big to go
also, i even love hips that arent even that steep. nothing's better than a big fat table/hip that you can hit straight, as a hip, or even carry speed to and hit it side to side. more options = better in a park
Here on the east coast my home mtn builds them a lot, but they are usually frozen solid and don't have the maintenance issues unless they put a wall ride on top, then the snow melts out at the bottom and it's easy to catch an edge
Blackcomb had one here for a large part of the season (I'm pretty sure this was just a stash of snow they were saving to top up the pipe for WSI). It was pretty fun, but got pretty fucked... I can see why if parks don't have the massive experienced park crew Whistler has they wouldn't bother
Hips and 1.4s are a giant fucking pain to build. Great for one off events but really shitty to maintain most places. Hips are easier to pull off since the long tranny is a landing and not a takeoff so it doesn't have to be as perfect but damn, they're a bitch.
Some mountains that still have their zaugs/pipe dragons running will build a 1.4 down the side. We had one at beaver creek as well as 1/4d the sides of our jumps with the zaug.
As far as hitting ones straight on they're just death. They don't last for shit, they'll end up with over vert holes in the middle or sections where the lip is gone and it's under. And it happens FAST, even in ice.
Also as bishop mentioned the transition for the straight on ones is different. For the big 1/4 contests, the 1/4s are built similar to jumps, there is a long transition at the bottom where you're taking in the most speed. This allows you to hit the thing and fucking send it without it feeling like you're hitting a wall from a full tuck and losing height/getting sent sketchy.
For a lot of the 1/4 shoots, they have diggers out there recutting the thing mid day to keep it rideable. And most of the time those are for a limited amount of people. You open that to the general public and every hit where the thing doesn't go to hell is lucky.
IT's just unrealistic to put that many man hours into something like that.
Also as far as the zaug/dragon cut ones, most mountains have sold, or have their cutters rusting in the boneyard. Nobody builds pipes anymore so that equipment all went to hell.
This is coming from somebody who loves boosting 1/4's by the way.

I mean, landings have to be pretty decent if you aren't trying to get sued. IF you aren't maintaining it and their are bomb holes and ruts everywhere and no records of maintenance that doesn't look so hot.
And the angle of them is wrong for a pipe cutter, at least if you want it to be super proper. Also you can groom them to an extent with a cat but it's risky. Depends on the height and the type of snow. It's not hard to spin out and fuck things up. Also in the spring or warm winter like we had this year good luck.
Parks need to be maintained, if you can't maintain a feature you can't build it. Even if you can, it might not be worth the time and resources to do so.
I love hips, I love 1/4s but they are a pain in the balls.
