Also, in regards to playing, some of the best wisdom I ever heard was a James Moody quote that "there is no such thing as easy or difficult, only familiar and unfamiliar." The more you practice something the easier it will become, and the more time you spend during your practice sessions doing things you're really bad at/uncomfortable with the faster you'll get good at them. It's just like anything else in that respect, and there are no shortcuts. Also, I'm going to shamelessly self-promote a little bit. This is a recording I did with my quartet a week or two ago. The quality isn't amazing because it was just done on a single zoom recorder, but with headphones it doesn't sound half bad. More jazz/soul fusion than just straight ahead jazz, but give it a listen and tell me what you think! And if you like it, give me an upvote/follow on soundcloud.
