Replying to Editing: linearly or step by step??

Hi guys, i wanted to know what your approach to editing (for ski edits) is once you've rounded up the shots you wanna use:

-Do you edit linearly, as in make everything perfect from a to z, syncing every shot with music and adding effects or whatever shot after shot so that everything you've edited from the intro to where you got is pretty much how it will look in the final edit?

-Or do you throw all the shots on the song to get a rough idea of where you want different segments to be, and once you're happy with the way clips are ordered you trim them, sync them and add effects?

I've been editing mostly linearly but I'm thinking especially for skiing that might be the wrong approach?
