Soccer and American Football

So today I was back in my hometown for a rivalry soccer game for the girls team. Ended up in a rough loss in overtime.

What I don't understand is the whole football team there talking shit about soccer and not exactly being supportive "I'm not allowed to say soccer in my house cuz it's gay"

As a little bit info are soccer program is the one of the most successful programs whereas football is the least

So what I'm asking is what's with this mentality? Honestly, I've played soccer my whole life, and don't have anything against football, except for in situations like this, and in my experience it's been primarily football. None of the other sports talk shit they just do what they do. Why is there this soccer vs. football mentality. I know soccer is called a grass fairy sport and what not, even though I know that most of those football players would get their asses handed to them by the soccer team in both sports. I understand that some soccer players are assholes but why this mentality? Why can't you get over yourself and just support your school and team rather than talking shit, and this is a pattern and ongoing battle, when it really doesn't need to be. I play on a premiership team, soccer a one of my big things, but I much more enjoy watching pro football vs some pro soccer and I'll admit that, but any football person I've ever met will talk as much shit as possible about the sport. I'm not saying one is harder than the other the each have their difficulties.


Kinda a rant.

I play football and I think soccer is the most boring thing to watch after golf but soccer is pretty fun to play with your friends after school.There is a good amount of physical activity in both sports but soccer isn't a tough and grinding sport like football. Football in my opinion is more fun to play and watch because who doesn't want to see a big hit, amazing touchdown or just a smash mouth game of football

Yeah that part doesn't even bother me anymore, soccer is on its way to surpassing football in the U.S. Anyways. Just people who come to an event like that just to talk shirt and don't even support their team. I'm not a huge fan of our football team...still going to cheer for them if there up agaist a rival.

I don't know about that... or care... it doesn't really matter what's 'better' in someone's opinion... simply put, soccer is awesome and people here are finally starting to get into it. It's fun.

I somewhat agree. The World Cup pisses me off cuz it's a bunch of flopping and stuff along those lines. But soccer can be a tough grinding sport. Remember we don't get breaks between plays and a game with ot (not uncommon) can go for an 1.5 hours. And remember we don't have pads. Doesn't feel as nice when you get a cleat to the chest and break three ribs, or getting knocked the fuck out by a 75mph shot. Ive seen hits and been involved with hits where the guy got knocked hard enough he couldn't walk for two days. Not to mention the fact that if you get kicked solidly in the shin guard it'll snap your leg in half. Just saying, Everyman should respect each other and his own.

Not professional but youth, I'm not going to argue stats I'm just saying more people are getting into as the mls gains more clubs and the youth become more involved, and as youth numbers go up it leads to popularity growth. The last world up was the most watched ever for the u.s. By quite a margin. But yes definetly agree.

It doesn't appeal to most Americans as a spectator sport, yea it's very common for American youth to play but watching it on tv makes me want to gouge my eyes out with a rusty fork. There's lots of running, minimal scoring and no contact. If I am gonna sit on my ass and be a sedentary, lazy American, I want to see some goddamn carnage and not feel pathetic because I can't run for hours on end like most soccer players. I don't think it's gay and I have lots of respect for them as athletes, plus I am sure it's fun to play for those who are more coordinated than I, but it's not riviting to watch at all. Plus I hate the PC crap about it being the world's game, it's so popular in third world countries because it's cheap to play and most of them can't afford tv's to watch sporting events on.

That's a good argument but also I've took some bad shots in football. Like punches on the line, headbuts, spearing, cleating and more. I agree that soccer can be a pretty physical sport in some games but football is every game grinding it out, taking cheap shots, and even flopping sometimes

I agree with most of this. I couldn't watch most of the World Cup...the amount of flops and political playing gives the sport a bad name. Want to see some funniness and carnage, check out El Classico. Usually pretty rough games with lots of fights, the one thing I do disagree is the very last bit, because soccer is popular in first world countries to (Germany, Spain, Italy, more or less all of Europe) and I don't think expense has to do with it because you don't see those countries national sport being baseball or other lower cost sports

The flopping mostly happens from certain countries where it's embedded in the culture. The Mediterranean european countries, many African nations, some of the South Americans... You don't see it as much from the Germans, English, Nordic teams, and certainly not as much from the Americans.

...it's mostly the fucking Italians, really. Most boring soccer in the world... get a goal, play super defensive and play keep away... and then dive all day and waste time on the ground so the other team gets carded and can't be aggressive. Fuck that bullshit.

this really isnt a fair comparison when the the goal of the entire defensive and offensive lines is to ram the guy in front of him and the rest of the players are supposed to bring each other down. Try playing football without pads and you'll see how willing people are to tackle each other then.

I wish I had a helmet with a facemask though. I've been kicked in the face like 7 or 8 times because people like to do high kicks near me apparently. My brother broke a kids ankle once, I don't even think he stepped on him. Been plowed by a few keepers before. Had my hand stepped on, surprised nothing broke. Getting spiked hurts. Not to mention two people running at max speed and colliding hurts a lot too. Seen a few more broken bones I believe. Shots to the chest or stomach feels awful, I haven't felt that out of breath and feel that pain like all through your abdomen in awhile.

At least we're free of concussions compared to the NFL.

I try to like you, I really do. But lately you've been to most obnoxious, condescending, overly politically correct prick on this fucking website. Yea it's huge in Europe, but it's also insanely popular in South America and Africa. Probably due to colonialism, yes, but I am pretty dang sure if you surveyed most third world countries soccer would be the most popular sport by a landslide. I interpret the whole "world's game" thing as more than just the U.S. and Europe, but maybe I'm just crazy.

I would agree. I think another issue is there are not a lot of huge well known U.S. Players. Guarantee if you asked ten average joes on the street the would probably only be able to name Beckham and Mayyybee Howard because of the one time he broke the record for most saves...other than that..

I phrased the last bit of my initial post poorly. I didn't mean that it's not popular in first world countries, but when I hear the term "the world's game" I think it encompasses the whole world, not just the privileged countries. The popularity of the game in poor nations probably contributed to it getting that nickname

Yeah....keepers man. They're scary. Pro example of this would be the German keeper like ten years back. Rammed into a guy not even going for ball and broke most of his ribs and like three vertebrae.

Not denying its popularity, merely stating why I think it will never be as popular to watch in the US as football. We are a nation of short attention spans and a desire for cheap thrills and i fall into that stereotype.

I'm not saying it's not popular in 3rd world countries... I'm just not saying it's only popular there because it's cheap to play. Basketball is extremely popular in the Philippines - probably moreso than soccer. Baseball is most popular in Cuba and a lot of other Caribbean countries with heavy US influence. Japan and Taiwan, baseball is huge. Australia/NZ it's Cricket and Rugby because of UK/Irish influences. Cultural influence plays a massssive part over what the most popular sport is in a country. If Canada had some colonies, you bet they'd be into hockey.

It's true. They'd probably say Landon Donovan too... who, honestly, was a pretty damn good player even internationally. No superstar, but definitely a guy who could hold his own on a top tier european side.

The USA will have it's superstars though... no doubt. There's too much good talent going through the system these days... Hell, we already might have another one with DeAndre Yedlin. That dude could end up being very special.

It's not as tough and grinding? The clock doesn't stop, you have 45 minutes running around a field that larger than american football. In american football you have plays that last a few seconds and then long pauses, you also have a whole different team for offense and defense where you're guaranteed to get a break.

But yeah, it's so much tougher because people are hitting each other. I think some of the rugby guys would fuck up the american football players anyway.

It also amuses me with how cool it is. Like you're the coolest guy in the bar if you sit their and nerd out and learn every stat about every player. Then go and in your unathletic middle aged alcoholic body talk about "your team".

I mean I def think sports would be big regardless, but there is def a pull to become extremely invested in it.

Idk, fuck it all, I'd rather hike a mountain.

soccer isnt as macho because it is a contact sport NOT a collision sport.

In the world cup (the only time 99% of america watches a match), it is condoned and encouraged to act hurt and play up an injury. In baseball, football, basketball, and hockey you are taught to never show weakness or pain...period. flopping is different than play acting youve just been shot when someone lightly grazed you. I will say, from what ive seen though, that team USA follows the typical american sport mentality so props to them.

soccer shape is different than football shape, is different that basketball shape, is different than water polo shape. Get the fuck over yourself. everyone is in shape. all sports are physically hard (except golf and baseball and maybe a select few others).

finally, its whiny soccer loving fanboys like you. what did you do about the guys talking shit? come on an anonymous intenet forum and talk shit. Basically gossiping behind peoples back instead of you yourself addressing the problem directly, head on. Again, goes back to the macho american culture thing.

First. never said I hated football and actually said I enjoyed watching it. Second.I actually did adress the problem, but I wanted to see other people's opinion besides that of the small population of hometown. Third. If your so salty about this and passed off leave. You ignore most of the actual conversation and are simply trying to start shit. I've agreed with football players on their opinion And aspects to and was in no way am I being a whiny soccer fanboy. Hell this is like my fourth time saying that I don't enjoy watching professional soccer,

I play football, and I can say that there's definitely kind of a rivalry between the two sports, kind of like skiing and snowboarding. My brother plays soccer, so I don't hate on the sport at all. Kind of the same stupid thing where some people feel threatened or whatever, it's stupid.

And if you say that football players are douches, that is definitely not always accurate. At my school every soccer player is cocky as shit... sometimes they need to be reminded that the only reason they win districts almost every year is because they are playing double A soccer in central PA in the first place...

I never faced people calling soccer gay until I left high school. I played my whole life and where I grew up it was huge. The football players in my high school weren't douches about it and some of them were actually some of our biggest fans and came to most games.

People in America don't like soccer just don't because it wasn't created in America. They like football, baseball, etc because 'murica. People in America say it's boring to watch, but I've read that a regular season United match gets more viewers than the superbowl so obviously the world disagrees.

Then there are the people that say it's not physical. Anyone that says that has never watched an EPL match. Those dudes fucking wreck each other. It's not American football or hockey, but definitely more physical than basketball. I'm a huge college basketball fan and you can definitely get away with more in soccer.

TLDR people who bash soccer do so due to uninformed preconceived notions and have never actually watched a real, good European match.

False flopping is rampant in the NBA. Ever watch LeBron play? He's criticized on espn all the time for flopping. And he's for sure not the only one.

it's the same as boys rule, girls drool, or hating on snowboarding vs skiing or vice versa

simple minds need 'us vs them' things to make them feel like they're part of something and have solidarity of some sort. all sports are tough in their own ways, obviously. you'd have to be an idiot to try to claim otherwise


as for flopping-- yeah it's a cancer to the sport but it's a product of:

1) a single goal in soccer is huge, so if you flop right outside the box and get a free kick you might have just won the game (also, running around for 45 min straight each half means neither team is going to get too pissed off when carlos over there is rolling around clutching his leg so they get a chance for a breather)

2) one of FIFA's many retarded decisions is that they don't let the refs review plays on video, so they have to go with what they think they saw live. so if you flop and it looks like a call, the ref sorta just has to go with that

3) it's just as much culture as it is anything else. in some countries flopping and dramatizing a fall doesnt make you a pussy and conflict with your machismo, it's more like a machiavellian "oh nice job you pulled one over on 'em" kind of thing. watch the US team, they almost never flop, it's just not respectable in our culture (thank god)


also on the culture thing, soccer varies greatly between countries. as stated, italian soccer is known for being brutally boring cause if they score one goal they play ultra conservative/defensive keep-away the rest of the game. now go watch english premier league and try to tell me it's not amazing

For me personally, I chose to play football when I was in school. I have nothing against soccer, the conditioning of the athletes is amazing. I just find it slow and boring, mostly because I don't understand it.

If i had to choose between watching poker or soccer I'd watch poker 10 times out of 10.

All I know is its far easier to be successful at football than it is at soccer

Shit I player soccer most of my life and am 100% confident I could outperform more than half the kids on my hs football team.

I always viewed football as the sport you play when you suck at everything else

I can appreciate how difficult soccer is and the conditioning those guys do is nuts. But i just find it boring as hell to watch. Like others have said i think its just something you have to grow up with to be able to really enjoy and understand the game

I guess I wasn't clear enough. In american sports athletes don't aknowledge pain. They do this as a display of toughness. Even when flopping( lebron doesnt do it much, hes just a popular guy to hate on) players dont act hurt. In soccer you overact the amount of pain you are in as part of trying to get the foul call. This is seen as the players being pussies.
