What should I get for my first car?

I need some help. I've been trying to shop for my first car (we're going with a used car) but I can't find anything. My father is set on getting the price on this website called Kelley Blue Book. And everytime I go to price the car, it's always lower than the list price. What is a good affordable car, that has good gas mileage?

OP such vague details. Whats your budget? New/Used? What are you looking for: Truck, SUV, car, AWD,etc?

Granted by coming to NS your going to get the same responses over and over again. Subaru, audi, BMW.

All I can say is unless your buying slightly used or new, don't be an idiot and buy some stupid high mileage luxury car or sports car to "look cool'. Get something reliable, cheap to fix, good mpg's...trust me when you need to repair it you will be very happy.

That being said...if your parents are buying you a car then hell yea get whatever the heck you want. If it was up to me right now...I would love to get the new 4Runner, Wrangler 4 door, or Tacoma...would come down to a test drive and what type of deals I could get

Need more details to suggest anything, really. Otherwise you're just going to get a bombardment of random prefrences.

My suggestion would be to, if possible, pay for the whole car in cash avoiding a car loan at all cost. A cheaper used car, yet still in good condition, will be better in the long run than taking out a loan for a newer car and having a car payment each month.

As mentioned before, get something reliable and good mpg's rather than looking for the "coolest car." Your future self will thank you for that.

Honestly, spend a little more on a car that will get you through college. The last thing you want is to get a cheap car that shits the bed every other month. I'd buy through a dealer too because you will at least get some kind of warrantee as opposite to buying through a private seller.

My friend bought her car through some woman and everything seemed fine on it. A week after she bought it the check engine light came on and it was throwin about 15 codes. It was almost 4 grand to get everything fixed and at that point she would have just been better off getting something better/nicer. So be careful with things like that.

My first car was a ford explorer. Kinda sucked. I have a wrangler now(JK) and the thing is a beast. Gas mileage is pretty shitty but it's fun as fuck to drive.

ok OP since im feeling nice today i will give you some serious advice, you would do well to heed it.
get a honda crv from the late 90's; 98 or 99, maybe even early 2000s, they almost alway keep a consistent price of around 4grand and they are the most reliable car you will ever drive. the gas mileage is great, very easy to maintain, cheap to repair if it has problems which it rarely does. you wont be winning any drag races but it can easily maintain a speed of 80mph, plus it handles very well in snow.

old crvs were sooo much cooler looking than the new ones. The new ones just look like the ultimate grandma car to me

maybe thats just because my grandma has one though

I got fucked over by a dealership. They charged me a thousand over the value and that was AFTER they took off a thousand because it needed work done. My parent's made me buy it because it was "reliable" yet I have had nothing but problems with it. I spent over a thousand dollars in less than a month because parts were going to shit. It's a 2003 Bonneville SE. Such a piece.

But a Wrangler is my dream car, or a 4Runner.

OP, if you're interested in a certain car, go to edmunds.com and do some research on it. Look at customer reviews, particularly the 3 star ones. As those are usually the most accurate representations of the car. You can see all the different specs on whatever vehicle you're looking at.

DO YOUR RESEARCH, MAKE A SMART DECISION

If the wrangler isnt really your style I would suggest the mustang:

I personally feel the same way, that I needed an upgrade. Now I warn you it is about $45 more, if your on a budget.

Subarus are pretty reliable and cheap, especially where i live, to fix because everyone drives one. I currently drive a 07 5 spd forester that was my first car and its decent. If you have a little more money to spend a4 wagons are awesome and super fun to drive as well as golf/jettas

Thats what i drive. And the newer ones, like 2000-12, are all similar looking to older CRVs and you can get up to higher speeds. Ive topped out at like 110mph. Never had any major problems with my 07 and i put like 30000 miles a year on it.

I should expand on this. I know a lot of people who have gotten Subaru's and as far as used cars go, it seems like they're constantly having more failures than anyone else buying used cars. Maybe it has to do with the way they drive them or previous owners or bad luck, but that definitely seems to be the case.

Yea a Subaru is a bad idea unless you know previous owner how the car was driven and have a service history. If there seems to be anything wrong wit it at all i would steer clear. Especially the older ones cause head gaskets sucked on those.
Personally I'd say go with a Toyota of your choice. Usually get decent gas mileage aren't to expensive and reliable.
