Assistant Editor
Full-time position based in Carlsbad, CA
Job Description
The desired candidate must be passionate about journalism, digital media, and skiing. The job requires managing departments on Powder.com, social media accounts, and departments in the magazine. The Assistant Editor will work closely with the Associate Editor and the Executive Editor. They must have professional writing and editing experience, an ever-evolving understanding of how media can use social channels, and a plan to grow Powder.com’s audience. They must be comfortable working on deadline, in an office, in Carlsbad, California, as well as while in the mountains with life-long skiers. The ideal candidate will understand the issues facing skiing, while being in tune with the characters that define this unique sport and a command of journalism. “The Skier’s Magazine” is tasked with communicating the skiing experience to their audience, and so the Assistant Editor must be ready to pitch, write, and edit captivating stories that define that culture. Powder is looking for somebody committed to this lifestyle that will grow with the company. Job includes travel for editorial features and events.
Skill Requirements:
• Journalism or English degree preferred; knowledge of AP-style guidelines
• Works under daily and weekly deadlines as administered by editorial staff
• Detail oriented and self motivated
• Ability to communicate and interact in a professional manner across all organizational levels
• Ability to edit and publish stories on Powder.com
• Working knowledge of WordPress, Photoshop, and InDesign.
• Advanced skiing ability
Salary:
• Entry-level position, but salary is DOE. Full benefits package.
