Weed or any other mind or body altering substance could be considered performance enhancing. Say you need to smoke weed to compete well. You're enhancing your natural performance.
Now, the tricky part is where you draw the line? Is Gatorade a drug? Is caffeine? According to most racing organizations (biking, track, skiing (xc/downhill, etc.) caffeine IS considered an illegal drug if ingested in large enough quantities. In other words, you could get kicked out of a comp. for having too many cups of coffee (in reality you'd have to have like 1.5-2 pots (12cups) of coffee).
The reason they do not allow drugs is because drugs provide the ingesters with an unfair advantage over the other competitors. Also, in a more traditional sense, sports are about pushing the human body as it IS, not as it CAN BE on drugs.
Also: some of you people need to do some reading. 'Steroids' is a very generic term. Most people who get caught doping are not taking your early 1980s horse steriods. Blood doping, EPO, THB, etc. are the common ones today. They don't give Arnold-esque rippedness, but enhance your body's ability to consume oxygen, for example. Big fucking difference.
I see no point in testing the ski community for recereational drugs because most of the competition would be eliminated. However, on the contrary to what some of you have said, doping provides advantages to all athletes, including skiers. So testing for PERFORMANCE ENHANCING DRUGS would be acceptable. However, we're just back to where I started off--any drug could be seen as Performance Enhancing.

^You'd think so. But a lot skiers say the 'need' to smoke in order to ski.

Thats what suprises me is that Tanner has in a way become a house hold name and the organizers want to have as many big name people involved in the event so it is in their best interest to have tanner and other big name people, who might smoke, allowed to compete
I'd rather be skiing

^Yeah and in the world of mainstream sports, smoking weed is something they want associated with a 'household name.' I personally don't care if they do, I don't think they're harming anyone. I don't think people see freeskiing the same way they see snowboarding. When the snowboarders became synonomouse with weed, everyone wasn't shocked. People don't see skiing the same way and if your main role model (Tanner)is this permastoned dude, I don't think people are just gonna go 'oh, those pothead skiers, hehehe.' It'll more like, 'drug test those burnouts.' We're held to a higher standard than snowboarders because we evolved a sport based on pure competition. Snowboarding evolved from surfing (also strongly associated with weed use).

right and if they do start drug test everyone outside of skiing would see that not only the bigs skier in freeskiing but also half the freeskiing community smokes weed, and that would only hurt the sport
I'd rather be skiing

If they use the WADA regulations for testing (like the FIS, IOC, IAAF, etc.) then the smokers only have to NOT be under the influence of cannabinoids (hash, weed) during their competition. There's a specific ppm number they're looking for in the urine, I forget what it is.

Weed suppresses messages from the pre-frontal cortex. This is the part of the brain that predetermines risk and potential outcomes from decisions or actions. i.e. Remove its influence, and you remove fear, hesitation, and doubt. Tell me THAT's not performance-enhancing?

personally the testing isnt about 'competitio' but like said above its probably from a business standpoint...
sports heroes must have strong morals and an image that is acceptable to the retarded general public, ie the midwest...
so yeah. i think weed is overall not great... but if a skiier wants to we should let them...

I got this straight from the event organizers so this is real and official--there is not random drug testing this year at the U.S. Open! The deal is that if you want to go to the World Championships in Finland this year and you qualify for the Team (which means you are Top 2 U.S. in the pipe), then you have to pass a drug test to be on the team. This is only in halfpipe and skiercross so has nothing to do with slopestyle at all.
So basically if you are Tanner and 2-3 other guys or a racer guy, this doesn't affect or concern you at all. There would never be drug testing at the Open. The only reason they are tied in to this at all, for those 2 halfpipe and 2 skiercross guys only, is because they want the United States to be represented by the right guys and not mogul guys doing daffies in the pipe. So there are 200 guys entered and less than 5 guys are going to be tested.
That is what is happening. No big deal. I heard the slopestyle course is huge and the pipe better than ever because of the snow, so it's going to be sick!
All times are Eastern (-5)
