JOI 2015

JOI is coming up in a few days. The Jump is 2.5m longer than last year, also it is also a 2m step down, its really huge. A new 5m rail is featured. Who will win? What new trick will be landed? First quad? Who knows, what do you think?

jump looks amazing as always, and the rail is an interesting addition. maybe we'll see some more dubs out?

also i guess it's not a huge difference, a ~6 foot step down, but it's funny that it's now a stepdown when all we've talked about since jon popularized his jump style was how safe and amazing stepovers are

I think they're waiting till the actual competition begins, the companies that sponsor JOI are, Audi, Snickers, Betsafe, Head, Odla and Åre.

Jon Olsson has stated to the newspaper Åreidag, that this years JOI will be the last.

'Free' means it's free. Free to be style minded and free to say fuck it and huck it. Saying it should be this or it should be that goes against the mentality behind the original premise behind the movement.

I've always thought that it's pretty silly for us meer mortals to try and dictate what the top level pros can and can't throw.

I obviously realize that 'we' need to remember the past and why things happened the way they did leading up to the current freestyle movement and it would be nice to see us learn from our mistakes. It's a double edged sword, and in all honesty - if I was skilled enough to consider trying a quad, why not? Is it any different than when I was hucking switch 9s with no style when I was a teenager?

Tldr: why? Why not? Someone throwing a quad doesn't denounce the whole sport at its current state.

Yea because as soon as someone lands a quad on skis, people will stop hitting urban and no longer ski pow.

I want to be able to be like, wow he has a really flowy cork 9and wow that guy has a really steezy cork 9 versus watching 2 triples/quads go down and have it be the same damn thing everytime. If you quad you win. Not how skiing should be.

God I hate this argument. It's a big air contest, the best trick should win. I don't think I could be convinced that a quad wouldn't be the best trick if someone did one. But definitely a double could beat a triple if done right, still don't see the reason people give a single fuck about what tricks other people are doing to have fun

The jump really isn't that much bigger. It's not the size that will push a quad. It's the fact that a boarder did it. If Billy Morgan didn't quad I don't think we would be talking about quads seriously right now. Bobby Brown laid out a triple backie on it already so maybee if we give him a little liquid courage he will go for it.

True. But what I ment by what you quoted was that we may come to a head in the sport. "Freeskiing" is a garbage umbrella term that I personally think only really represents the industry side of skiing. As triples become the reg and if/when quads come into play we will have to rethink what our sport is. Yeah, comps are getting to a level where it's hard to relate and it's getting very far from the root of the movement that created it, but olympics didn't kill style and creativity, and I honestly think that whatever route the comp scene goes the core of what we believe in Isn't going to disappear as soon as someone throws a quad. Did style disappear when double came on the scene?

Anyone who was a skier during the transition period in the late 90's was a skier because skiing is fuckin awesome. So what if it was stale at the comp/social level. We are a part of one of the most long lived sports in the world that is amazing at reinventing itself. We need to take a step back and look at the bigger picture - this is skiing, in all its forms. To put things in perspective, this is a thread about the JOI, a competition that for the last couple years has had park skiers beside racers. Skiing is timeless, trends come and go.


I'm a little inebriated right now and I think I'm ranting so I'm gonna stop for the time. This thread is about an awesome big air competiton which is known for pushing the limits of what is possible on skis. To try and hinder progression in terms of what is possible (which, in my mind is what JOI has always been about) doesn't sit right with me. JOI and JOSS was at the leading edge of pioneering double and triple corks. If you are going to hate tech and praise style, you should probably hate JOI in general.

Darryl - First off I love you. I owe you my life, because you introduced me to newschoolers. Do not take any of this as a diss on your ideas, just open and good discourse.

Frankly though, absolutely the double killed style. Hell, the switch 10 killed style. Sure, style didn't disappear, but in the eyes of a lot of people who watched contests - we're just huckers. Contests have become absolute fucking miserable huckfests where the amount of crashes and injuries are escallating.

The Newschool movement started because we wanted to break away from the iron fist of FIS. Well let me put something plain and clear:

FIS didn't show up and make the sport suck because it was a bunch of lame old guys. Dudes like Frank were sending quads, and everyone trying to imitate them started to either die or become quadriplegics. Legit pro skiers started to get so fucked up that the sport simply wasn't safe anymore. There used to be shitloads of big air contests with huge prizes, and there was air sites and jumps (almost terrain parks) everywhere. IN THE FUCKING 70s. But people started to get so fucked up with multiple flips, because if you over-rotate a spin whatever... maybe you break a femur. If you over or under rotate a multi-flip, you break your fucking neck and you either die or you are in a wheelchair.

Rules, qualifications for jumps, and overall lameness HAD to happen, because no insurance company, TV station, media or sponsor would want to touch these events if they were a bloodbath.

We already saw the start of this at X last year. Henrik getting annihilated, and watching a big air that was a fucking crash reel was where it starts.

As much as we want to support 'progression' and say that more flips is key, the closer we get to being forced into regulation in our sport. The closer we get to following the path of the hot dogging movement, which was exactly like what we now call freeskiing - and everything cool was taken away from them.

The only sustainable path forwards for us is to let go of the multi flips as the only way to progress the sport, and start supporting the athletes that are pushing style as the main form of progression. Guys like Max Hill should be able to win the X-games.

To anyone that says you can't judge style over hucking think about this: Ever played Amped 2? Amped 2 was unreal. The best part about that game is the only way to score super high was by making super calculated and smooth movements on the sticks. Hit a jump and do a corked flippybillionspin? Low points. Hit the same jump with the same air and manage to move the sticks slow enough to do a misty shifty 5? Bazillions of points.

Why? Because that game used fucking mathematics in a game engine to treat smoothness and style as a multiplier vs. a simple part of the score.

the weather isn't looking to good for the comp and i heard that they are taking the cannon rail out so they have a smaller back up jump if the weather craps out.
