great idea for a thread/poll but i really doubt there is any link between dominant hand and skiing

the majority of people slide right foot forward, and the VAST majority of people spin left.

about 90% of the general population is right handed, so while for all i know ~90% of people spin left and/or slide rails righty forward, i really doubt it's the same 90% in either case



the weird thing i think about is that im pretty sure the majority of skiers slide right foot forward, but i think 70% of snowboarders are regular (left foot forward), which makes no sense to me. i always assumed you'd ski rails the same way you rode a board.. i do at least

Your hand doesn't matter as much as your foot. And yes I know people with a dominant left foot and right hand.

So the poll should state, which foot do you use to jerk off. I use both feet and my left hand.

Everyone that I know that snowboarded before they skiied slides rails with the same foot forward that they learned to snowboard with forward.

Generally snowboarders have their dominant foot in back. For instance I ride regular, slide rails right foot forward on skis, and prefer to spin left on skis, and am right handed right footed.

That's pretty standard.

hmm that's interesting. i think i at least stepped foot on a skateboard or snowboard before i slid a rail on skis. i wonder if that affects what people learn as their natty side on skis

hmm interesting, because IIRC ~80% of people are right footed. so that jives decently well with ~70% of people being regular (left foot forward), i guess

I write and throw with my right hand but do like everything else lefty. Idk that means, but I spin left and slide right foot forwards.

same here. its probably just a matter of pushing with the right foot is easier, but approaching a rail knowing your hitting i'm hitting it with my left foot forward scares the shit out of me

yeh that might be why for me although i skied, then snowboarded for a couple of years, then skied again

Contrary to what most people have said, I ride regular but hit rails left foot forward, it feel much more natural.

On another note I always notice it's natural to pop off left foot forward rails switch, and pop off right foot forward rails regular, I bet if you thought about it you'd notice that too. I'm talking bout plain simple 90 degree offs when your not thinking much, just lapping

The question is WHY the majority of people spin left. It is true in almost anything that has spinning involved (gymnastics, ice skating). My whole, spin right, right foot forward really is not ideal.

I learned snowboarding goofy and i grind goofy. But now I am thinking I should have boarded regular, cause I feel like my right foot is definitely dominant. maybe I would have gotten better at snowboarding... This really all started cause my sister and I shared a wakeboard when I was younger, maybe that screwed me all up since we agreed to set it goofy before any legit knowledge.

i mean, unless somebody you were really young or somebody told you to ride the one way I feel like most times you will end up going the way you're meant to.

I've taught people goofy on boards set up regular, just noticed they were favoring that direction, switched their binders quick and taught them goofy.
regardless it's a fun sport. If you ever feel bore with skiing try it out for the day. I learned that after my longgggg break with skiing. Nothings better than being complete garbage in the park while smiling ear to ear. I've never had so much fun barely surviving flat rails and down boxes while bumping throwback and 90s jamz.

I'm surprised so many right handed people who spin left say they slide rails right foot forward. That's like being goofy foot on a snowboard or a surfboard which i would have thought would have been the exception rather than the dominant one. I expected right handed people who spin left to overwhelmingly slide rails left foot forward.

I'm left handed and spin right. I surf goofy foot as a majority of lefties do (which make sense) and slight rails right foot forward (ie a goofy stance)

I wish I saw this thread before I learned to get on rails. Spinning left and getting on left foot forward would make FS spins so much easier.

Most people spin left from their heart. Similar to passing the dutchy to the left. This is a good thing, it means you are strong willed and pure of heart. I SPIN TO THE RIGHT, BECAUSE I AM EVIL!!!!! MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!

Pretty much don't even know which way I spin still, Like I would say I spin left, grind left foot forward, and write right handed but I learn right side shit so much quicker, Like I suck at left 2s but right 2s feel normal and are suppose to be super unnatural but aren't. Never have been able to right lip 2 but have done left lip 2s so I'm all fucked up. The more I think about I just am better on the left side of lips.

Not really sure if theres a huge correlation... me and my twin sister are both left handed and we spin in different directions... ive never noticed anything suggesting it w anyone else but id be interested to find out more

Sorry for quoting a really old post. But I guess that makes me really weird. My left foot is dominant, but I ride my skateboard regular. I also spin left and grind rails left foot forward. And I write left handed, but I throw right handed. I think which arm you use to throw has a lot to do with it, because it's that one you'll use to throw across your body.

Until recently I thought I naturally spun left but over the summer discovered I spin right 100 times better than left. Still can't slide left foot forward though so I spin left 90 and then everything else is to the right. I'm fuckin weird.

I wonder if this has anything to do with watching other people ski. When I first started in the park I spun right and tried sliding boxes and rails left foot forward (same way I skateboard).

I tried to mix it up early on because I looked up to Charles Gagnier. Now I spin left going forward, right going switch and slide right foot forwards.
