How can I make indoor skiing pictures better?

Hi,

I was just wondering what you guys thought of these pictures and if if and how you think they can be improved.
I adjusted them both in photoshop a little, because I think the main problem is that all indoor pics look the same.

I find that the background is really busy, and because of that the skier/ snowboarder doesn't really pop out. (It's me in these pictures but usually I take the photo's).

By no means am I or do I wanna become a pro photographer, I am a total beginner at taking pictures and I just borrow a camera from a friend, but I do appreciate nice skiing pictures.

So main point:

Please give me creative and technical advise on how to make the coolest/ best indoor skiing pictures. (what angle, settings, black and white or whatever)

I think they look dope as hell cause im not used to seeing structure like that above jumps! Some photoshop wizzes can probably help you here on the technical aspect, but the only thing I would change is the color of the gear. Lighter, brighter colors will make the skier stand out more. The skis are nice n colorful which is the most important part. That might not be an option for you though. Just somethin to think about.

I would say use a longer lens and get a bit of depth of feild in there. alternatively you can use the blur tool and selectively do it in photoshop (although doesnt look as good as dof being done with the camera instead of post)

still looks pretty decent though

For the first one, maybe a longer lens/bigger aperture (low number) to isolate the rider from the background. For the second one, I would get closer/use a wider angle.

For both, it looks like you have some backlight, or there is at least a shadow over the rider. Apart from using strobes, you could try shooting from another position, or even having the rider wear brighter clothes. The bases of the skis are what catch my eye in both, then I have to look a little to see the rider. More light on the rider, or brighter clothes would help bring the focus to them.
