I've had straight A's since 8th grade... Now I am a sophomore in high school, I have an A in every class but I have a solid "F" in Algebra. The average grade in the class is a "D". Been getting tutoring all year long and studying my ass off and all of the blame is on me.

Yeah, I'm not going to sit here and think that some teachers don't suck, but I was trying to say that the thinking of our nation has changed. Instead of saying "well do better student" we changed to "Why is my child getting an F" and putting the blame solely on the teacher. You know, some teachers do suck, but my algebra teacher isn't someone. I'm not good at math, always got b's to c's. I'm in algebra 2 and I'm getting a c+. You feel me?

i dont support the capialist nature of our education systems in the US so when my child turned 8 I drove him to the dense wilderness and left him to survive.. here he is today, I'm sure he's smarter than most of you idiots wasting your time in the US education system

thats a weird way to look at it. she probably has dozens of students, each with a different need. you want her to teach each student differently? students should adjust to a teacher's style of teaching, not the other way around, like op mentioned. students today generally just love to blame other people for shit that goes wrong. thats not to say there aren't some shitty teachers, but based on what op has said it doesn't sound like she is one of them

New parents all think their kids are special snowflakes and they can do no wrong. If they're doing poorly in school it's cause the teacher, never mind that plenty of kids are getting A's.

Also heard on the radio that they're wanting to do away with standardized testing cause it stresses out poor billy. Hug box states.

I talked about this with my English teacher today. He told me that there should be a mutual adaptation between student and teacher. He basically said that a teacher that doesn't adapt to it's students is a bad teacher. And a student that doesn't adapt to it's teacher is a bad student.

I don't mean the teacher has to individually adapt to each student, but the general style of teaching has improved a lot over time and op said she was still teaching the old fashioned way.

People blame teachers, but it's not entirely their fault. I'm sure there's bad teachers, but there's also bad students who have no desire to learn and don't care if they get a 40 on a test. That's their parents faults, and the kid's fault too. The teacher can try everything, but the kid doesn't care and they won't do well because of that. Parents don't want to blame themselves or their kids.

I had a math teacher who was 82 years old, still plenty sane and all, probably from doing math all day. She was old school. But I knew my shit after I was done with that class. Teachers in the grades above knew who had her and who didn't. She's retired now and this was before this whole bs, but you wouldn't say she's a bad teacher because she makes it challenging and doesn't hand out good grades.

I think a lot of the problem is the archaic teaching style of making kids sit in a classroom for 7-10 hours a day forcing them to sit still and do work then when they can't pay attention (and who can blame them/me at one time) just give them pills to shut them up and look forward.

I agree that students whining about teachers is usually no reason for retribution. It's true that lots of students today are unmotivated and that the relationship between a teacher and a classroom is a two way street. Chances are, your teacher had a couple of whiny students whose parents complained to the administration. However, the overall situation for public school teachers is often not the case.

The way teachers are treated in the public school system in the US is fucked. This stems from the relationship between unions and school districts. Teachers unions often keep school districts from being able to do comprehensive evaluations of teachers and so lots of kids get stuck with "lemons" who have tenure and can't be fired. Tenure for public school teachers is stupid - if you are fully evaluated to be an ineffective teacher, you should be given the opportunity to adjust and you should be at risk of losing your job. The fact that unions have to fight for this crap because school districts refuse to pay teachers what they deserve is shitty. Teachers deserve to get paid more than what they do because their work is truly important. Good teachers - based on those evaluations - should get paid more.

Because of this dynamic, there are lots of teachers out there that deserve the "ineffective" label.

Bottom line:
1) Teachers can suck, it's not all on the students
2) The relationship between teachers unions and school districts sucks and has caused a lot of problems for the US public school system.
3) Teachers should get paid what they deserve (i.e. much more than they do now) and should have the opportunity for performance-based raises.
4) Teachers unions should give up tenure and the fight against evaluations.

Standardized tests are bullshit. I can see in some subjects like math using them since math builds upon itself and english, but science and history cover such a vast amount of things that it is hard to remember it all.
Standardized tests have changed a lot since I was in highschool 4 years ago. Then it was pretty much do normal classes and maybe have a few classes that teach techniques for taking standardized tests, it never really interrupted anything. Now the district has teachers taking a shit ton of time teaching directly for the test because funding/their jobs depend on the students doing good on them.


From my experience the harder the class was the more I learned because I actually had to study. Sure there were a few teachers that were just awesome teachers and you would learn a ton just by paying attention and not have to study much. Now that I am finishing up college I realized that a lot of my classes I didn't learn nearly as much as I should have in some classes. There were so many kids that just wanted an easy grade and didnt care about what they learned and would bitch when they would do bad on a test.

Nothing probably happened, shes just lying to you so you'll think"oh this is so unfair" and put in a good word for her and shell win a new coffee mug for teacher of the month or something. I've seen it a hundred times.

It's a fucking ruse i tell ya.
