What happened to the baggy pants, the tall tees, the biggie mashups and afterbang. What happened to the sport we all know and love?

I could embed edits all day long but that's not what I'm making this thread for.

I've been thinking about this all winter, what happened to skiing in the past 4-5 years? What made people change from the baggy pants and gang signs and all that other shit? Like..NOBODY skis like this anymore. Not even the people that are still in the game. I miss that shit...that shit was cool.
THAT SHIT WAS COOL.
Speaking of cool..It seems like skiing peaked in "coolness" back when these edits came out. The whole style of skiing culture was different..it was fucking awesome.

These edits, at least for me, have an aura to them. Brings me back to when I REALLY just starting to get into park skiing. Maybe that's why I appreciate these edits and that time in skiing so much..maybe that's why when I see the change in skiing today I want it to go back to how it was before. Maybe it was the lack of high quality edits being produced. Idk..

Nothing made today stands out to me like those edits did, (og jiberish, og junction133 edits, og brogan edits, og clownschool edits) 2008-2011 was a timeless era in skiing and i fucking miss it so much.


Natural progression of the sport and technology I suppose?

I hope I got some of you thinking with this post. I feel like there's a fantastic conversation to be had with this topic, I'm just not sure what to say to get it going..

i think skiing is still cool, and some of my favorite edits have been from this year

but i see where you're coming from, park skiing had a much different vibe 5 years ago, things have definitely changed

It was a cool era at first. It was one of my favorites.

But EVERY single edit was the same. It just got to the point where everyone looked the same, skied the same, etc.

I miss that style too. Watching the old edits with the gangsta music, gun gestures, aggressive afterbang, man that shit gets me going! But I feel as tho those days are gone for good. The edits from this year might give us the same feeling in 7 years that the 08 edits did. Either way, I'm still rocking my tall ts!

It's all about the development of personal style and those who follow. I feel like a big part is the pros and there style, the next generation is going to emulate them and change their personal style slightly and so it evolves

Style just changes sometimes. Some days I like to wear baggy stuff, others I like to have a more loose fit style or fitted style. It's just when something new arises and people like what they see they want to do the same.

Skiing is more diverse right now than ever, but still some of my favorite edits are probably from 09-11. I feel like it's a normal thing to be nostalgic and to say that it was better back then. For me, it's pretty hard for a ski movie to top Refresh, and for older people, it's the same thing but with 1242 or TeddyBear Crisis.

Hey bro, im still rocking some suspended 2xl just above my knees, a hoodie that could be my sleeping bag and a few tall tees under and over. Doesnt matter that most people aren't into it any more, i get to be one of the baggiest g rider at my hill :D

But i feel you, i miss watching new edits with that style, afterbanging the fuck out of 2outs...

We need a bunch of good amateurs (which today means someone who can dub and 4 on and out xD) to throw us back to some laid off dspins and urban simple rail slides. #throwitback #Gtimes

Fuck i do miss the mix of hard shredding g style with flowy afterbanged tricks :(

I got into skiing during 03 - 06 ish sort of time, so I miss regular fitting clothing, Swollen Members in ski movies, and dudes like CR throwing threes off of cliffs into super sketchy snow on 90 underfoot skis. I'm sure guys older than me miss the time when neon outerwear and scott schmidt and glenn plake were the shit. Times change

I miss OG Phil and Henrik the most. They used to have that aggressive gangster style. Now it's way more flow, but more mellow and chilled out.

I dont rock super OG style but I sag my old virtika pants and wear tall t hoodies just because I feel comfortable in it. I don't want to look "G" as hell. Just casual/flowy style. Seeing kids who sag like Henrik and try to have gorilla steeze and put their hands up in weird ways trying to be gangster is just funny because you're just copying someone else ie. Phil, Henny. Overall feel like riders now a days ride with their own specific style and I enjoy that!

People have been emulating the greats in every facet of life since culture became a thing. But for some reason skiers are the only ones that get butthurt about it.

Yeah I suppose skiing would become incredibly boring if it all stayed the same and styles didnt change.

Thanks for the replies im glad this opened up a little bit of a discussion.

Im liking the posts of old ski edits too. Its really cool to see people's opinions from different era's of skiing.

Am I the only one loving the skinny pants movement? Guys like max Hil, Khai, Cole Drexler are all so much fun to watch with their creative style. And oh my Banks Gilbert latest edit Adventures in Transition is by far my favourite edit from this year. Tight pants and good music go hand in hand

Thanks for the nod Chubz! Much respect. It was such a fun time for sure. I feel very thankful for having gotten the opportunity to work with such dope skiers.

The quality of work out today is much higher overall, so many people are putting out banger, high-quality edits and webisodes, mostly for free, its insane. So fun to see all the different styles out there, from The Big Picture to Compton's Weak to Good Company to Steve's hilariously tear-inducing maniacal satire to the Bunch, TC, Nipwitz, Hoodcrew and probably 10 insane Scandi crews I haven't even heard of. It's awesome.

It may or may not be, Tanner Hall explicitly said that Henrik doesn't smoke at all. Henrik is just in a higher state than everyone else in the world of skiing, enjoys expressing himself however he wants, and slays at the same time. There are plenty of people who listen to reggae and don't smoke weed.

Personally I love the new style of skiing, the clean landings not faking it with afterbang. Im not a huge fan of tight jeans and shit but also dont really like the whole 5xl fad, I ski how I want now OP if you wanna ski like a gangster which is sooo 2008, then go for it, ski how YOU want not how you want other people to ski.

Honestly I don't think that we've lost that era of freeskiing at all. I think we've just amassed a greater sport following and with those more people, more and more style diversity is introduced and replicated.

I started skiing right around that time so I spent many hours watching and studying those classic edits…Brogan, Sean J and Wallisch's Superunknown edits, Slumdog Illionarie, Wallisch Windells 09 edit, 4bi9 takes Aspen, 4bi9 PC Crack edit, Dale's Okemo Spring edit, Fuck!, Welcome to my Hood…the fucking best man... (if you are reading this and haven't seen any of those edits watch them right now)

I think a lot of it had to do with the Olympics. When Henrik was pretty much the only one competing in super baggy outerwear a lot of people not from the scene took notice and called it out as being ridiculous. At least from my experience I heard a lot of people who don't really ski saying stuff along the lines of "yea the dude killed it but why is he wearing those huge fucking clothes." Just as a result of all the exposure to the general public, I feel like a lot of skiers got more self conscious about being all thugged out.

All the kids i meet always have this horrible "im better than you" attitude, and non of them ever want a hit of my piffer. In my opinion skiing is about having fun and chilling with your buds not this whole competive mindset. Just my two cents



I didnt want to bring up competitions in the OP because i didnt want to make another style vs comp skiers but you both bring up good points.

Could competitions be a big part of the change?

But how could it be judged? Since style is subjective i dont see how it could work.


(if you have an idea for it post about it i'm interested into seeing what you have in mind for it)

well, landing a tech trick is pretty subjective as well. in slvsh sometimes people don't slide the entire rail, do it sloppy, or barely get a rotation around. it's judge's choice. mainly the skier calling the style sets the bar and if the judge doesn't like it, it's a no go.

Haha trust me he does. Not sure if Tanner was joking or just trying to create a better image for him but I can confirm that he definitely blazes.
