Epic pass road trip

alright so turning 21 next jan, will be real busy over the next 6 months so trying to work out the general plan and costs now.

i want to go to the colorado resorts, a basin, breck, vail, beaver creek, keystone. and potentially pcmr if i have time. probs going to hire some sort of van and sleep in that. not too worried about the cold. giving myself about 30-35 days. nothing set in stone yet.

cant afford the accomodation so thats why im going with the van

a couple of things i do need help with;

1) ideally id get a subaru outback or something and put a mattress in it. coming from australia its going to be a massive bitch buying, registering and insuring my own car. if you guys have any advice on van rentals that arent priced through the roof that would be good. or any mates that are selling a subie, ill give them $1500 and then return the car back to them after.

2) any ski lockers at these resorts? this would help considerably with drying gear and keeping wet stuff out of the sleeping area.

3) any rec centres in that area? showers would be most important but then i will have a lot of down time so the gym would be useful aswell.

4) overnight parking, not too fussed about this as im happy to set up wherever, but if theres overnight parking that would work well.

joining the army for engineering soon after so want to pack in as much skiing as possible, because i wont be able to much for the next few years. not too fussed about partying heaps, been to whistler and im not going for that sort of trip. will be smoking heaps anyways so thats sweet.

all of those resorts are within an hour of each other. You don't need a vehicle or have to live in one. Use the money that you would have spent on a vehicle to rent a spot in Breckenridge, Fricso or Silverthorne. There are busses that take you from those towns to the mountains.

id imagine it would be quite hard/expensive to get a place for one month in the middle of the season?

There are a lot of people that rent houses and stuff in Frisco for months at a time, but it may be out of your budget if its just you. Craigslist will usually have a few temporary living or subleases that go up every now and then so go through that every now and then just to see if something pops up.
As said before, the summit stage bus system is pretty good for getting around Frisco/Breck/Keystone, and if youre here for a month chances are you'll meet people with cars (holler when you're here)that can scoot you around.
There is a rec center in Silverthorne (town right outside of keystone) that has a punch pass. It's like $130ish for 25 visits. they have showers and all that jazz.
As for parking, there is a Walmart in Frisco so you can post up there, there is also a big lot in Dillon where the big grocery store is... Im not totally sure if they "allow" overnight parking, but I wouldnt bat en eye at trying it out.
If all goes to plan I will still be skiing Summit County next year, and I hope to still be an active NS member so if you get out here and find your self in a tight spot, holler, and we can find you a place to stay

The bus system is called the summit stage and it can take you to the resorts from Frisco or Silverthorne or Dillon. They're free, but they can take up to an hour or two to get to some of the resorts. IMO, I would go with the subie or van. Good luck and I hope you have an awesome time man, the skiing is sweet out there!

cheers guys ill look into it. would happily pay $1k/m for two months if someone was to sublet a room for me, but that sort of thing is hard to do in advance, so its difficult to work flights around it.

There's a good chance that it will be very cold (-10F and below) at night in January. Daytime highs can even be below 0F in January, with nighttime temps dipping below -20F. I'd highly recommend finding an indoor place to sleep. Remember, ski bums are poor, lots of them would probably be willing to rent our their couch to you for a month for some extra cash.

thanks for the advice. i have a -40f sleeping bag i can use from my uncle that climbed k2. im not really bothered by the cold i think it would be a bit more of an adventure.


in saying that if i can get a good sublet, its going to be cheaper than the van, wont have to pay for gas, and ill be able to eat a lot better.

There isn't from Summit County. You would have to drive, get a ride, or hitchhike.

See if you can rent a car from an nser. If I'm out here next year and living close enough to vail to get around without a car for a bit I might be down to let you cruise around in the forester.

Check on the logistics of buying one though. If it's not TOO bad, you can get some decent enough cars pretty damn cheap here. The bus system is good but you're not trying to stay in one area. I guess you could use the summit and eagle buses and then take a real bus to park city idk.

As far as getting between everything it's not that bad. PC is about 6 hours but you can shred PC and Canyons. The CO resorts are all in a line pretty much right off 70.

Best of luck man. Hopefully will get to shred perisher or some of the other Aussie ski areas eventually

just looking on airbnb and i have a couple of fall back options. but id prefer to stay in a house with people around the same age. just hard organising stuff like this so far out, usually its a last minute ad that will pop up that are the best

Check out craiglist.com. IT's like trademe or what ever you have in Aussie.

Put a post on there, maybe with a picture of you skiing or something saying "Hey, I'm a skier from Australia looking for a couch to surf or to split rent for a few months, I'm not a serial killer." And mention the dates you're expecting to be over here.

Some people are lame but a lot of people are pretty cool. Getting a place yourself would probably be out of budget honestly. It depends where you go but it can be pricey, and if you don't have a car, location is everything. Idk if you do any instructing but apparently with vail resorts you can do part time instructing and only need to do 14 days(you get paid for) and you get an epic pass. That could be well worth it although I'm not sure if you have to be around at the beginning of the season for clinics and what not.

But def scope out CL. It might be hard to find a place also since you're coming for part of the season. Usually with the limited housing they try and get people to do full season or 6 month leases. That said always people looking for roomates on there so you can look on the shared housing section and also post an ad yourself. Site is free, pretty legit, I've gotten housing a couple times on there and bought a car off there.

thanks for your help, i have a few years instructing but getting a visa for the states would be near impossible. i can work in canada instructing, but i get very little freeskiing time. i will scope out craigslist and see if anything eventuates.

Ah fuck, I forgot about that. Yeah, you have a better shot at the lottery than scoring a visa in the states. Even canada has been cracking down. Some of my friends from NZ had everything line up, jobs, place to live to go back to Canada, and their visas got rejected this fall.

Hoping to get to Aussie for a season on a work holiday sometime. I wish we did those here.
