Pet owners vs. Pet people

I grew up on a farm and had dogs and cats and horses and stuff as a kid. I don't have any pets right now, but I probably would if I lived out of town. That's where I stand right now. I am not anti-pet.

I have no issues with people who have pets, but when they become 'pet people', they drive me up the wall. I'm talking every other Facebook post about having pets, putting their pets in costume, spending thousands and thousands of dollars on things like hip replacements and dental work, and (I throw up in my mouth every time I hear it), calling their pet a 'fur baby'.

Maybe it's just me, but I think there is a difference between people who have a reasonable relationship with their pet and insane, crazy pet people. Most of my co-workers are crazy, insane pet people and I am surrounded by people who either don't stop talking about their kids or their pets. Possibly one of the most annoying things ever.

Pets are fucking dumb unless you can eat them or they have a useful purpose. Pets in houses are even worse. Just filthy creatures that are not at all meant to be inside. Also I despise cats because of the amount of songbirds they kill. I'm 100% for a cat cull, kill every feral cat you can possibly find and then pass a law that says if your cat is found wandering around outside without a bell it gets put down on the spot.

I know I have a very unpopular opinion on this matter.

My cousin got a R.I.P tattoo for her dog that died two years after she got it.

The only pets I approve of are German Sheppards, Huskies, Or Pit-Bulls. They are badass

I have two dogs, one Saint Bernard, and one black lab.

My saint bernard is almost 9 and has the energy of a wild raccoon.

I got my dog as a puppy and I have trained her and spent so much time with her that she is just another member of the family, and if I needed to spend a lot of money on her to keep her healthy I most certainly would. I mean I would never dress her up or stupid shit like that. I take her hunting and fishing and out on long hikes all the time. So yeah I guess you could consider me a pet person.
Also, This study recently came out that basically says you love dogs like you love your baby. I mean not 100% the same but its kind of interesting. check it out

I know thats going to happen. All dogs die, my last dog died. That doesn't mean i'm not going to do whatever I can to keep her alive as long as I can and as long as she is healthy enough. I see her as just another part of the family. And when a part of the family gets sick you don't just say, "Hey you're going to die anyway so I'd rather have this money than have you around for a few more years".

because making decisions based on emotion and not financial logic is how rich people turn into poor people, and how poor people stay poor.

My best friend's aunt spent over $30,000 of her husband's money on her cancer infested cat. She could have put it down the day she found out for like $100 or whatever it costs to shut down one of those litter spreaders, but instead she spent the cost of a car to keep it alive and suffering for her own selfish pleasure.

Then again I think the earth should have 500 million people total, and we should voluntarily kill ourselves off until that point, so I'm probably a bit skewed on the whole keeping pets alive thing.

Growing up in a farm, we had cats to keep mice away and it worked. We gave them just enough food to keep them around, but not enough for them to get lazy. We had barns and stuff for shelter in winter, but inevitably a bunch would freeze, a bunch would get caught in engines or get run over and some would get eaten by wild animals or run away. Nature seems to work itself out in the country.

In my experience, cat people seem to be way worse than dog people.

I can understand spending some money, but not insane amounts. Growing up, if it was reasonable, we took care of our animals, but if it was going to be too much it was usually time for a new dog. That said, we had some bad luck as well. 1 we got from a shelter and was nasty. No good with foster kids around. 1 was hit by a truck. 1 died from a heart attack or something. 1 had a brain aneurism or something. 1 lasted a really long time and was an awesome dog.

Pets are not humans and shouldn't be treated as such. I don't care what people say or what studies show about our connection with them.

The original vet didn't even give it a potential lifespan, and just told her it had cancer and would die soon. She had a "breakdown" and the cat ended up going to a specialist in California and getting this giant, multi staged plan of attack. It had diet instructions, chemo meds, meds to make the cat feel better after chemo, more meds to make the cat eat, etc. I know it really gave her hope, and it probably worked for however long that thing stuck around. But inevitably it died of cancer. I felt like she was totally scammed by a fraudulent, fake industry. I know her husband wasn't poor, but I know he wasn't loaded either, and I know she didn't have any money to pay for all the medical expenses.



It was pretty old, and i remember it dying by the next school year. So she did all that to get what was probably 10 months of misery out of her cat. And they got divorced within a year, and id bet the cat had something to do with it.

I'm pretty sure if you eat them they're not called pets they're called livestock.

Problem being the cats are still doing far more damage to nature than nature does to them.

domestic cats, along with habitat loss, are the 2 largest reasons why something like 80% of Canadian songbirds are projected to be listed as 'at risk' in the next 30 years. It's actually crazy how many birds they kill and what damage they do to nature. For sure one of the worst invasive species we have.

Lol so don't treat your pets as such and ignore the people who do. If someone wants to spend their time and money on their pets, does it make them a well-rounded, contributing member of society? Maybe not, but who cares? It makes them happy. The level of commitment one will make to a pet is a matter of personal opinion. Let people do what they want and unfriend the crappy facebook users who spam your newsfeed with cat pictures.

I generally do, however most of the people in my office are those people. Generally the vast majority of break conversation either revolves around their kids or their pets. It's tiresome.

you guys implying that there is a bird shortage because of cats? doubtful. if caTS DIDNT...WOOOPS, didnt eat as many birds as they do, there would be massive amounts of birds everywhere, white shit coating everything as far as the eye can see, and more bird-borne disease.

I personally love both of my dogs to an extent that yeah, if I had to save their life I would. But I do have limits. I would never spend more than the dog cost me on vet bills. Yeah my instagram and Facebook are filled with my dogs, but they are one of the best parts of my life, if that's sad idc, I love those golden fucks. I take one of them with me anywhere, and OP, if I brought them to hang out with you, you would drool.

Me and my GF refer to our dog as a fur baby. That's probably the only thing I do that people might consider me a crazy pet person. My gf has only dressed my dog a few times. We got a rain poncho for him mainly because he hates rain(I don't get it though he's half lab, and loves water. He just hates when it falls from the sky for whatever reason). In the year we have had our dog we have only put people clothes on him once. I personally don't find it a big problem with dressing him up every now and then(as in like maybe 2-3 times a year, if that), but I don't ever want my dog to be dressed up every day.

People might consider me a Crazy pet person. I don't see a problem with dressing up your dog every once in a while, but I also prefer to let my dog be a dog because he is a dog, not a doll. I'm also not one of those people that post's pictures, or talks about of their dog every day. My GF has done a fair amount of puppy posts now they just come up every now and then when we teach him a new trick or something that he doesn't do on the daily. Maybe Make a post on FB 2-3 times a week. I would consider that fairly moderate considering how bad some people have gotten. One thing I will say is that I really dislike is Crazy pet people who make a FB page for their dog.

My main issue with pet people these days are the people who fixate on a certain breed and spend retarded amounts of money for some designer animal that probably has myriads of genetic health issues, meanwhile perfectly good animals are being put down by the thousands in shelters every day due to overcrowding. Also people who don't spay/neuter. I get if you have a champion show animal that is a glowing standard of the breed and you intend to have it reproduce for the betterment of the breed, but some fucking trailer park asshole or lazy college kid who thinks they can make some quick bucks on their pit bull lab mix having puppies? No.

I love my animals, and part of taking responsibility for having pets is doing what is right for them if they get sick. If your attitude is fuck it then you shouldn't be a pet owner in the first place.

its one thing if the break a leg and need a cast. but to spend thousands of dollars to attempt to save a pet from cancer or something serious that is likely to come back is just pointless imo when their lives are already so short. ive loved the fuck out of the dogs ive had but when shit like that happens its just time to move on. putting down my last dog was the hardest thing i had to do in my entire life but i couldnt stand to see him suffer and why spend thousands to get another year out of him when i could 4 more dogs for that same price

The dog of a family friend of ours ate a rag. So they spent $4000 to have it removed. Then it ate another rag and they shoveled out another $4000 to remove that rag.

A total waste of money imo

Yeah I'm not really arguing that point, everyone has to make their own decisions about when to put their animals down, and everyone knows one person that is spending thousands stringing their sick animal along that has no quality of life left, but I'm just saying people on here are bragging about not giving a shit about their dogs and I don't think that's something to be proud of.

So essentially you are saying you'd be fine domesticating and raising a pig as long as you eat it at some point? So you live and raise and grow attachments to an animal and then kill it and eat it? Sounds psychotic.

I've had dogs and cats. Cats are by far the most low maintenance pet you can have. There are also such things as indoor and outdoor cats. Not all of them are out there killing your precious birds, though mine killed a baby cardinal a few months ago, I was so proud.

False. My snakes are far less maintenance than the cats are. i only have to throw a mouse in every week or so. Clean shit every month or so. vs cats that basically require daily care.

Level 3 (Loser pets): Fish, birds, mice, etc.

Each level has a certain level of emotional connection. For instance, you may cry after a cat or dog or even a rabbit dies. If you cry after your snake dies you are weird. No one cries when their fish dies, unless you are a serial killer. Level 3 is also the most replaceable.

I also just made this list up on the spot.

Also with a snake you have to change the lighting daily with a night bulb and a day bulb so you are wrong.

idk, i wouldn't put ferrets, rabbits, etc. at #1. i mean, let's be real, they're pretty much just big rats/mice/etc, i.e. food for cooler animals. they don't "love" you except for the fact you feed them.

and birds at #3? there are a lot of birds that can live 50-70 years and are smart as fuck. people have to have a game plan to care for the bird because it will outlive them. definitely more emotional attachment there than with a stupid rabbit. (fwiw, i fucking hate birds.) not to mention they're expensive as fuck.

oh, and no, you don't have to change the lighting daily for reptiles. timers...they turn the lights on and off for you. It's magic. i certainly can't argue the emotional attachment part though....there really isn't any there.

Warning bells should ring loudly when a girls tinder profile has 2 or more pictures with her dog. Or if she refers to her dog in her profile as her best friend or how much she loves it. Cats too.
