I went to get a haircut today at my favorite Barber shop. Today was the first time I have ever not tipped my barber, and I felt bad about it. I only had the exact amount of cash on me :/
Does NS tip the barber?

theabortionatorTipping has no fucking meaning anymore. I wish we as a culture could go away from it. Obligatory tipping is fucking retarded,
Everyone just does it all the time to feel better bout themselves. I wish we could move completely away from it, and go back to tipping people for doing an EXCEPTIONAL job. I tip at restaurants because they don't pay their employees shit otherwise but it's really dumb.
They should have to pay wait staff minimum wage and then get rid of this bullshit need for tipping. Also the millions of jobs where people don't get tips, and all the complaints from girls who think that opening a beer is the most difficult job in the world doesn't really help.
Tipping, standing ovations, and whatever else can all go get fucked.
I wanted to rant more but dinner is ready
UglyboyThis so much! Like I get dirty looks when I tip poorly at restaurants when the service was shit. Tipping has moved from being an incentive to provide great service to just compensating for shit wages.
californiagrowni doubt you get dirty looks when the service is shit. you likely think a 10% tip is the baseline tip. THAT'S why you get dirty looks.
UglyboyI'll admit, I tip poorly when the service is shit. But that's the underlying principal of tipping. I'm not going to tip you 15-20% because you were a shit cunt of a server. You're getting a very basic 10%
californiagrownAnd what service industry jobs have you done in your life where tipping was customary? Cause i bet if you had worked in one, youd have a very different POV on ho a bad tip vs a bad tip vs a normal tip is earned.
you don't go below 15% unless the service was noticably bad.

SteezyJapaneezy6 bucks for a $30 haircut. Its definitely worth it, and you should tip them generously since they help making you look better.

theabortionatorthan some chick who learned how to open a bottle of beer.

RudyGarmischIf you were to create a system of paying people for goods and services from the ground up, you would never arrive at tipping as it exists in the US today. Furthermore, countries that embrace tipping all have higher rates of corruption than those that don't.
If you aren't going to tip, be nice about it and tell the server/service before you sit down.

SKI.INGI'm with Borty, and disagree with you. I've worked shitty jobs before, and nobody tipped me. So why do I have to tip waitstaff who earn the same wage as me? So I do some backbreaking work, and when I go out I have to give extra of my money to somebody earning the same wage, and in a less manual labor intensive job?
Mind you I do tip, but extremely performance based. In CA, waitstaff receive minimum wage and up. Some probably make more than the people tipping them. Tipping should not be automatic, that is what a paycheck is for. I hate when people say, "Oh if you had to do that job, etc etc..." There are so many shit jobs where people don't get tipped. And don't even get me started on the bar scene.
cool_nameYa because that is a bartenders only job, please go work behind a bar for night and then try and say the only thing you ad to do was open a bottle of beer. I'm not saying a agree completely with our current tipping standards, but don't try and tell me working behind a bar is as easy as just opening a bottle of beer
californiagrownWhat jobs did you do where the customer relied on you for an aesthetic experience as well as a quality product. You tip for the experience the give you.
UglyboyI worked at McDonalds and no one tipped me
californiagrownA tip is warranted when the business places a value on the experience above and beyond the base product they are selling...but only charges the price of the base product. Or when there is "art invlolved".
you understand, right?
UglyboyI had to take peoples tray away, ask if their food was good and generally act like I didn't want to kill myself. Pretty sure that's an art.

californiagrownHaha.
I will say that the whole reason you tip at a bar(not a nice establishment with craft cockctails, or jacket attire) is so that you get stronger drinks and quicker service. Essentially it is a bribe, which is contrary to what an actual tip is. so leaving a $3 bribe on a 3$ bottle of beer ensures that you get served almost immidiatley next time you go up to that crowded bar.
