Dartmouth & Middlebury

Yo NS. I have to make my college decision this month and it's essentially down to these two schools. Anybody attend? What's the freeskiing scene like? I know each are under an hour away from big mountains (Killy, Sugarbush) and each have their own slopes as well. I'm pretty excited, don't think there's a wrong decision, just curious as to the nature of the communities with regards to our sport.

Go with Dartmouth, it's a better school and I am assuming the ski scene isn't much different between the two. Think about the long run decision, and you still will be able to meet people into freeskiing. (this coming from a guy who went to Bates, which is somewhat comparable)

Go to the land of beer pong. I went to some classes at dartmouth. Partied at some frats, met some cool people, and stuff like that.

Never officially attended though but it's right there on those road trips between ny/vt and nh

dartmouth is not necessarily a better school at all, middlebury is tough as fuck. dartmouth has the reputation though being an ivy and all

that said, just from being on NS through the years, you definitely hear more people mention dartmouth as having a decent freeski scene rather than middlebury. maybe fewer nsers go there for some reason, but i do not hear too much about middlebury's scene

personally i'm turned off by the ivies so id say go to midd and see what theyve got going on, but until someone from these schools comments you wont know for sure

Middlebury is a better ski school, as it is closer to better skiing (Dartmouth is about 1.5 hours to Sugarbush and probably around an hour to Killington), and the ski culture at both schools is pretty similar.

Academics/reputation wise, obviously Dartmouth is better, but Middlebury isn't too far behind; it's not considered a little ivy for nothing.

In the end, both are great choices ski wise and academics wise. You won't regret going to either school, so I'd say go with your gut and pick whichever school feels most right for you.

Hanover, NH where Dartmouth is is a pretty un tapped resource for urban skiing (if thats your thing). Theres a lot of spots around there. But if you're just looking for the community I can't help you here. Middlebury is close to northern Vermont and Sugarbush which is where a lot of Northern Vermont skiers go. You are likely to meet a lot of people through that channel.

I think the ski community scene at Sugarbush is a lot more developed and welcoming. They seem to have a strong crew there and welcoming.

I wouldn't strictly base your decision off the skiing community at either school. They both have them in a pretty big way. At this point its all about the education aspect and where you see a better fit for yourself.

it doesn't really matter which school is better. the fact is that in life, an ivy league education, especially from dartmouth, will get you better jobs and/or higher pay. this isn't a knock on middlebury. that's a very great institution as well, but people that will be in charge of hiring you will be more willing to give you a job that pays more if you graduated dartmouth over middlebury. plus, dartmouth generates a lot of people in the ski industry, if that is something you would like to get into.

Thanks for the input everyone! Dartmouth '19. Definitely didn't base my decision on skiing, I was just curious to see if any NS'ers were alum, etc. and if there were any established groups or anything. Couldn't be more hype

congrats! thats an exciting decision to make. College will be the best 4 years of your life until the next 4 years after that. do it big

i go to a similar school as middlebury and i would say definitely go to dartmouth. While good liberal arts may seem attractive, you wont meet very many skiers and a lot of the people just are not chill. Bigger schools like dartmouth will definitely have better partying and more freedom.

Don't know what your career goals are when you graduate...but just being in the field of finance / business if you have any desire to do that an ivy league education is priceless. Not that you would learn anything different but trust me, on campus recruiting and brand name are soooo important for job recruiting. Can't stress that enough. Some of my IVY league friends are making 2,3,400K a few years out of school.

I'm a Junior at Dartmouth.

I took classes MWF my Sophomore year and I skied Kilington nearly every tuesday, thursday and saturday. I love the school but its going down the shitter. Lots of new policies including a campus wide hard alcohol ban (even for 21+).


Hit me up when you're around next year.

250k is nothing compared to being in debt for the rest of your life from a shitty job. Think about it you make that back in one year or two after having a decent 200k job. College and better yet any good college is undoubtedly worth it, and anybody who says otherwise is an idiot.

Middlebury snowbowl is pretty boring too. But it is always empty, always, so you can shred hard all day.

Plus, not sure what Dartmouths' cost of addmission is but Middlebury will run you around 65k a year, higher than Harvard. And lets face it, the majority of degrees are being devalued annually. Not worth it imo.

also they don't grown on trees.

you're not going to get an entry level paygrade of 200k anywhere.

Out of grad school....not to hard to get a job at 200k all in for the year.

Undergrad...pretty difficult but VERY possible if you have the right connections (especially from an IVY), GPA, internship experience, etc. My investment banking pay all in for my FIRST year out of college was $140k. Second year should be able to hit ~$150-175ish.

Next position is with a HF or PE firm and should easily be able to make close to if not 200k for a couple years.

That being said....its very hard to break into these areas but ROI on an ivy league school is worth the initial investment 100% unless your going for chinese underwater basket weaving or some bs major

Addressing price discussion: I actually ended up making my decision in part because of price. My parents are teachers, so I was thrown pretty hefty scholarships, but Dartmouth's resources are just that much deeper. Would've been 40k more for Midd, sorry Chinchi

Ski scene at both is gonna be mostly racers from what I've seen and heard. I've worked with and met a fair number from both schools in the summer and they're mostly good people but very, very east coast preppy.

very true, many people have useless majors or decide to teach afterwards. Usually means they don't make so much or their parents fund their studies, but if your an econ major at dartmouth you are guaranteed to make over 200k if you attempt to get a job and have a gpa above a c
