Backyard Starter Kit

I was wonder what would have to go into making a backyard rail for over the summer. I was thinking of trying to make one but have a lack of knowledge about it. Or even if it is worth building one.

I know you can use PVC piping, however do you have to do something to it in order to have your skis actually slide on it?

Other than PVC piping, what else do people use?

For the runway and landing, what type of material did you use? I read you can use astroturf (expensive) or some landscaping material (I know what it is but unsure about the name).

Any help is much appreciated!

this. advice I'd give is to use dimensions of someone's setup that's already been built. Don't try to wing it and waste a ton of wood and $$

$20 bucks will get you a rail. If you're going to build a drop in a cheap miter saw is a good buy. Can get one for $50 probably. Not sure when fathers day is but that's always a good day to buy tools.

For the drop in you can just use carpet honestly. You can also cut turf down and use strips to save money.

On the drop in the taller the better imo. Most people build them and don't get enough speed. I say over build it, if you have too much speed you can extend the inrun which honestly is sweet anyway because you have setup time.

If you get a miter saw, through some 45's in there because 2x4s are cheap and you might as well build something that will outlast your house. Cut big and hammer them into place then screw them. Shit will be rock solid.

The PVC will slide fine, I've tried waxing it and it just made it too slippery and harder to get grip. This was in the winter though, maybe you need to throw on a little in the summer since its drier. I'm planning on building a summer setup this year too

Last summer I picked up this white pvc decking. It has the pattern of wood grain, but it slides absolutely perfectly. In a way, the grain lines fill in with snow and make it easy to slide. If you do go that route, I would still recommend buying 1.5 inch pvc pipes as coping. It will make it super easy to grip. It feels like a normal box/rail.
