Skating. Give it a go or?

So i've noticed a ton of freeskiers get their fix in the summer by skating and it seems very fun and similar. The feeling of progression, hanging with friends, and similar risk of injury. My question to you NS is should I invest my time and money into this sport? I have heard that it is pretty difficult to get good at and a nice deck is a decently large investment for a working student. At the same time, it seems like it would be fun and a lot of my friends do it.

Hell yes. I don't skateboard but there is nothing wrong with trying new things.

I have considered. Except none of my friends do it and my town already has an amazing skate community so if anything I would buy a deck not blades.

Go for it. I suck at skating, like REALLY REALLY SUCK, and its still a good time. Been going at it for 2 years, can't even kickflip, but its still fun and you should def try it before saying you do/don't like it

Skating is really fun but you'll struggle for the first month learning to ollie and the basic tricks but after it's super fun.

Do it for sure! I bought a skateboard like a year and a half ago and even though I suck I still have a lot of fun! It also really helps your balance, and it makes summer less boring and painful

do it man. i skate when i get the chance, which usually isnt too often, but its a ton of fun and definitely tough. you can get a solid basic setup for $60-80 as long as you dont care about zumiez brand name stuff (which you shouldnt).

absolutely get into it! it's super fun and a hell of a challenge, like way harder to be good at than skiing I think. totally worth it though.
also, it's probably one of the cheapest things to get into. compared to other 'lifestyle' hobby sports, it's way cheap. it's literally just the board, which is extremely difficult to break unless you're huge or something.

A nice setup is around $200 not that expensive.

Compared to my other two hobbies, skiing and cars, skating is super cheap and because of that I end up buying so much gear I don't need for it.

longboarding not skating, but similar costs

Don't buy a longboard

Don't buy lollerblades

Buy a blank/shop deck at first, Independents, etc

If you spend 200 bucks on a complete that you're just learning on, you're doing it very wrong

realistically a decent setup will cost you $100-120. But first see if you can snag someone's old board and see how you like skating and go from there

I tried to do a popshoveit and hit my shins on the board, so in terms of shin pain skating is kinda like skiing

skatings hard dude. before trying to learn any tricks i would make sure your really good at actually riding it and have good control over the board. and dont get caught up on ollies. theyre a lot harder to learn than most people give it credit for

Skateboarding is fun af. Give it a go. Get an old friends board and if you like it then buy a stock board.

If you're good at skiing with balance and you're willing to learn. It'll be loads of fun.

You probably won't have much trouble getting started if you can ski well. If you can get some friends to go out with every now and then its endless fun for one price to start off.

I, too have been trying to get into skateboarding. I have tried it on and off for a while but always got frustrated. I can ollie and shuvit while stationary, but really cant progress is there just a simple tip that im missing?

Yeah the on and off part is why you don't progress.

Go for it dude! Skating in the summer is super fun way to retain balance and cruze around places. It's gonna be a little rough to learn at first, but I def recommend giving it a shot. See if oyu can borrow a buddies board before you drop $150 on a set up.

Learn how to ride your skateboard first. If you can do tricks stationary, but not moving at least at a jogging pace, then you need to learn how to skate better first. Ride everywhere, get comfortable enough that you can weave through people while pushing, turn with just your front foot on the board, kick turn, pop off curbs, shuffle your feet all over the board, slide your wheels, etc. Just ride it. Ride it until you can do these things with a coffee in your hand on the way to class.

Then go back to working on tricks. You will automatically be better than 95% of beginners who try tricks but can't skate.
