Help, Mac Mini options.

Im purchasing a mac mini soon and i am going to use it for editing a lot, so ill need to store and have on access a lot of shots (300 +) for photos (5000+ pics), music (5000+ songs).

The Mac mini i want is the "2.8GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 8GB memory 1TB Fusion Drive1" i will also be downloading software such as fcpx and other photo/video editing systems.

This is where I'm stuck, Mac gives you the option to upgrade the Processor, Memory, and Storage.

Processor options
3.0GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i7 (Turbo Boost up to 3.5GHz) [Add $200.00]

Memory options
16GB 1600MHz LPDDR3 SDRAM [Add $200.00]

Storage Options
2TB Fusion Drive [Add $100.00]
256GB PCIe-based Flash Storage
512GB PCIe-based Flash Storage [Add $300.00]
1TB PCIe-based Flash Storage [Add $800.00]

So what should i upgrade because I'm planning on having this computer for a while and still have it be fairly quick in 5+ years

go 16gb of ram, 3.0ghz processor and the 1tb fusion drive is just fine.

Honestly though, you could build a way better computer for the same price that you could upgrade over the years...

I would definitly go with the 3.0ghz i7, and i think 16gb of ram would certainly be a good call...

I think hard drive wise, it makes more sense to buy a beefy external drive. I have the LaCie 2big Thunderbolt (6tb) that i got on craigslist for 350ish and it is killer, i think external drives make more sense for storage...

OP for the same price of this mac mini you could literally buy the same exact machine and upgrade the major components at least twice each when the time comes. Plus, if you're buying custom parts you might as well just go Intel based so you can give yourself the option of building a hachintosh because i take it the ability to run mac OS' is big for you.

that website has everything you need.

If you've never build a computer before, do some research there are tons of videos on youtube. Also, I got my computer a few years ago from http://www.cyberpowerpc.com basically you pick your components and they build it for you for a small mark up.

Intel processor and a Nvidia gpu and you can get anything else, but tonymac has guides for the best parts to buy. If you're tech savvy its super easy, if not maybe find a friend who is. the mac minis aren't a bad deal, we use a bunch of mac minis at my work (tv station) and they hold their own for how small they are. They definitely won't be a workhorse but they'll get the job done.
