gavinrudyI've been noticing this happen to a number of really popular videos lately, and it has happened twice in one day to mine. I see videos get a ton of upvotes, make it to the front page, and then disappear after sitting at the top for a while, but not the typical life span of a video. If you scroll down the home page a TON you can find them again. If it makes it clearer, I uploaded a video at 11am, it went big around 1pm, then disappeared and was at the bottom of the homepage after a few loads/scrolls. Then it came back up and was in the top spot again until 6:30 and then dropped off again. Just wondering what's causing them to get bumped down on the homepage?
Mr.BishopWill look into it. Paul is on paternity leave right now so expect a bit of time.
What would be really helpful is if you could notify us exactly when you see this happening and send a link to the video.
gavinrudyIt's hard to point out specifically, but keep an eye on whatever video is upcoming and really popular. If it makes it to the top spot, it'll hold that spot for an hour or so, then it'll disappear. If it's really popular you'll see it rise back up the page in popularity a few hours later. It's exactly the behavior of when a video gets VOTD and is removed from the front page feed, and it can still make its way back to the top of the feed if it's popular, it just keeps getting reset at randol times.
Mr.BishopNo, once a video makes VOTD it is definitely specifically removed from the feed to avoid duplication.
That is one of the things that has made this tricky - I think people are confusing intended behavior with what may or may not be a bug.
Videos will jump far down as the day's new hot stuff comes up and passes it all at once, depending on how rapidly that video got upvotes. Blocks of content can pass all at once.
The thing that doesn't make sense is if something jumps back up to the top after going down. That definitely smells like a bug.
gavinrudyHmm, that's weird. I distinctly remember feed resurgence of VOTD videos. Maybe not lately, but I remember when I made Margarine last year, it was on top of the feed all day, then got the VOTD and was back on top for the entire next day and some the following day.
I'm still thinking that it has to be a bug, because traditionally when content passes, it doesn't jump down 20+ pieces, nor does it resurface an hour later. But I guess you just agreed with that so we're on the same page there. Just something to keep an eye out for. I really noticed it on my new video, but I've assuredly seen it happen consistently to hot content in the last few weeks.
