Getting onto rails

I am looking to try this down shotgun rail . You have to come on from the side. I feel like I will not jump high enough to get on. Is this just a mental thing?

Yes. imo its a lot easier to do this than to go on straight because it forces you to lock onto the rail. You will easily get over it as long as you pop

If ur talking about the one in progression park at brandywine, then you dont have to come from the side. It may be easier but as long as you pop hard you will make the gap

i know its a "gapper" thing to do, but try just popping as high as u can from the lip of the jump (with out hitting the rail) and if you can get your feet above the height of the rail, you know you can hit it. one you know the speed and pop that you will need, visualize what you gota do, then commit.

Also try once just going up to it slow and "stepping on" one ski then the other, then sliding down in on motion. This gives you a feel for the height and slide. It's like a scope out. After that pop on with speed and you'll be set. Good luck

Just keep focused and remember to lean forward a little bit. At first, I would lean back a little bit on my rotation. When I hit the rail I would slip out and fall backwards. Looking at the end of the rail really helped me with the balance. Don't over think it... Just focus on the rail, pop on to it as hard as possible, and then look at the end of the rail to help keep your balance.

the first rail/box i ever hit, i literally went to the park at like 7:30 am before anyone could make fun of me, and walked up to the rail and climbed on to it and slid down lol... but yeah you dont wana start any bad habits like the classic "step on"... its only acceptable if you are doing a baby crusher.

That's what I was saying. I didn't mean the bad habit. OP just needs to get used to the feeling of sliding down instead of flat.

Try not to think about it too much. Keep your weight forward, pop hard, and look to end of the rail and you'll be fine. Try not to step on. A clean pop makes rails much easier and stepping on is a very hard habit to break. If no one is around I would recommend you practice popping off the lip of the jump.

agreed, do what you can to get the feeling of the rail. i think OP is comfortable sliding rails tho, hes just sketched out on hitting this down shotgun rail.

Come in at a angle and jump over the rail it doesn't look like your a gaper if you do that and if you can jump it you can bet high enough to get on. That's what I did but idk I told my friend to do that but he was more scared of jumping over the rail than onto it and sliding it. Idk it worked for me

our hill doesn't have any woods. The reason why he wants to go sideways on is that there is a 3 inch gap between the lip of the kicker and the shotgun. I ski his hill and if you even make contact with a rail kids think you are good.

it looks scarier than it is just go in quicker and pop to make sure you get on then once you realize how easy it is figure out the correct speed and pop.

Timing is important. It's all about the little things. People usually just cover committing and looking at the end which is the most important thing, but not the only. Stay patient on the lip, don't think about popping onto the rail, think of the lip bringing you there, pop towards the end of the rail, don't pop over to it which usually causes you to fall of the other side. Don't force it, and don't get anxious to get on it right away. Flow onto it nice and smooth. Also keep your hands down while you get on/are on it.

when i first learned rails from the side the first thing i did was have a friend watch me and i just jumped as high as i could and if have him tell me if my skis were above the rail, the second time i committed a little more and did the same thing but at an angle and jumped completely over the rail, and the third time is like the second just go a bit slower and aim farther down the rail. thats what i do but yeah its a mental thing its not that hard once you commit

yeah speed isnt that big of deal as you can get onto the rail really fast or slow if your good, but hitting them going faster is easier as you dont have to pop as hard but its also scarier. going slower is the exact opposite harder to do but not as scary
