Should more movies be 'free'?

As most of you probably know Super Proof Inc. just released The Recruitment for free, Candide just released Few Words and MSP have been releasing old movies for free online for a while along with Inspired Media and they are just the few I can think of right now.

My question is: Do you think more companies should release their movies them for free or would you rather them be released on Netflix where they can still generate some money to go towards the next projects? Or would you rather the movie be free for a short period of time like MSP did with Days of my Youth and then you have to buy it to watch/re-watch it?

(For those of you with Netflix: Supervention, Valhalla, All.I.Can, Tracing Skylines, McConkey and Into the Mind have all been released)

I don't mind paying a few dollars to own some ski movies.

it's pretty cool of them to release them to the public rather than let them die after people stop buying copies of them though.


on another note.... I wish I had the dvd version of this

Definitively cool that they put them up for free after people have stopped paying for them but sadly I think allot of people end up waiting for the movies to be put up for free instead of buying them right away. I know for me I don't really care allot about seeing movies straight away when they get released so if I have seen in the past that the company usually ends up releasing them for free its allot harder to justify buying them. Also I feel like when its so many top quality full length movies online that you can watch at any time for free I don't longer have that big of a need to buy movies.

Btw I still buy a couple movies every year to support the companies and to be able to watch them directly from itunes.

It's a little unfortunate because the tend of the media is moving away from feature productions. Attention spans are limited and people are too familiar with receiving quality content for free online to be as invested in DVDs and films anymore. As a consequence, I don't know how self-sustainable production companies will be in the future. Honestly, with the structure of content nowadays, I think we'll be seeing more shorts like what "The Good Company" is starting to do, but fewer feature films.

well i dont buy ski movies anymore and haven't for a few years now. the main reason is that ski movies seem pretty disposable to me, kind of like a yearbook. They are really awesome for one year and then quickly become dated and I will never watch it again except a few parts which are usually put up online anyways.

I could elaborate further but I just don't feel like it right now.

In order to make a big production ski movie it costs money. So there for you have to pay.

But i think where the media is going to be towards team videos. Such as oil and water or the Vishnu GAS video.

This will be the future because it is a direct marketing tool. If you make a video to sell another product than the video itself then you are able to realese the video for free. People will still buy skis. So sell them on the skis through your video.
