Project Analyst -- Long Island, NY salary negotiations

Company is an energy consulting firm located on LI in Garden City. I am leaving an energy supplier located in Syracuse where salaries and cost of living are low. finished school with BS in Analytics and Finance. The LI firm has offered me a job, we are currently in the process of salary negotiations.

TDLR-- over a year experience in natural gas and power markets, would like to know what kind of salaries i should expect in the NY metro area.

Can't answer your question, but I can tell you living on LI is extremely expensive.

Be prepared for endless suburbia. Makes me claustrophobic as all hell. The farther east you get the more open land there is, but if your in Nassau County its just house after house.

My ex lived in Massapequa Park and it was a really nice area.

You can check this out to get an idea of what a comparable real wage would be.

It says 50K in Ithaca is equivalent to about 80K in Brooklyn. Play around with it to get an idea.

^ Yeah it's pretty dense here compared to Suburbs around the country. Almost a hybrid city/suburb.

What are you looking to spend on an apartment? You want to be close to the beach? Train? Bars?

I have been living in Jericho, LI for 10 years now. Its really quite expensive to live here, and taxes are pretty high. Most kids at my school live in multi million dollar houses and all own luxury cars. The enviornment here kinda sucks balls.

Other than that, the beaches here are awesome, and they are great for fishing. It also gets super muggy and damp during the summer.

Yeah that COLA calculator was saying
upstate ny --> 50k is about 66k in long island.
i will be commuting by car so thats another expense.

I live in Locust Valley on LI, about 15-20 min away from garden city, its right next to Glen Cove. It's a pretty nice area (mostly woods) but the price range varies alot throughout the town so its pretty much suitable for anyone

I grew up in a the westchester / tri state region. Similar areas. Your just around NYC. The cost of living is high. Granted if you have any form of negotiation power in your interviews...I would push for 60k+. 60K doesn't go very far at all. If your living on long island well obviously it goes a lot farther than being in the city.

That being said...you work in a quantitative field in a high demand / high paying industry. I would push for 65K hoping to settle around 60k.

Another thing I learned...take a higher salary over a higher signing bonus. They tax the FUCK out of bonuses to the tune of ~50%.

my current employer in syracuse said they would pay 65K for this position
now granted cuse is like detroit... rent and COLA is dirt cheap
they said i should expect 70-90 that close to the city.

Congrats on the job. Work it for 14 months, then start looking to move to a higher paying position. Also, work your ass off so you are in a good position to move. Your company may want to give you a higher counter-offer than a competitor to retain your talents.

All solid choices.

I've lived in Oceanside my entire life minus my time in the Army and it's a pretty good spot. I live within walking distance from a pretty decent bar scene in Rockville Centre. Close to two LIRR stations. 5 minutes from the beach. It's also about a 25-30min drive to Garden City from where I live in Oceanside.

Some places to avoid Uniondale, Hempstead, Westbury, Roosevelt

im just curious. how are areas outside of queens dangerous. it seems dumb expensive to live anywhere over that way. how can thug ass people reside there?

Prices vary all over the place depending on the area.

Takes me ~30+/-5 minutes to get from my house in Oceanside to school in Garden City.

It would be great bringing your girlfriend to split rent but there is no shortage of quality females on Long Island. That's also assuming she plans on finding a good job. Not sure if you were asking that haha.


I'm from semi-Upstate and have been to Jones only a handful of times but don't remember ever paying. I believe my ex-gf had a parking pass though. And when I went last year with friends and not her, we didn't pay anything but no idea how that works.

Basically, my post doesn't help at all and I just like to chime in on NY related threads.

I wouldn't go to Jones beach, if you move to any town in the Oyster Bay area you will be able to go to TOBAY beach (less crowded). Also great beaches would be Flying Point or Coopers
there is almost nowhere well known to ride a dirt bike but you can probably find somewhere on your own, like behind the library in my town
