Honestly I don't understand why I have gotten so much negativity from racers just for being a park skier. I'm not saying all racers are this way but nearly all of them believe that their type of skiing is the best. Why is this? Aren't we all just doing what we enjoy?

Its simple: They're spending the whole day doing restrictive drills in skin suits. You are spending your whole day jumping, having a blast and wearing comfortable clothing.
If they were to admit you were a skier too, it would make everything they are doing silly.
Just ignore it. I quit racing because of how fucking serious everyone was a very long time ago, and it was the best thing I ever did. Riding the park is fun as shit, and you can become every bit as good of a skier over time.
They ski to try to be the best. They're competitive for the sake of being competitive. They don't know fun, they have no souls, they are creatures of the underworld.
I was racing in the alps a few months ago, and before the guy in front of me dropped for his run I said "good luck bro!" and he looked at me wide-eyed, wondering what the catch was of me being nice. All the racers I interacted with looked like if they could have broken my legs and gotten away with it, they would have, just so that they would stand a better chance at winning. Lol

Therefore anything they say should not be considered too seriously. I think one of the reasons that racers look down on park skiers is that they simply don't understand why we slide down metal tubes for fun, the same way we don't understand why they turn around poles for fun.
I was listening to a racer-dad yelling at his kid on the chair and I just couldn't believe my ears.
"Never get that close to a riblet again!"
"Bend your knees more!"
"Use your goddamn poles"
I felt pretty bad for the kid.
Racing is what the general public thinks about when they hear the the word "skiing". Lindsey Vonn is the only name that people really know. It is a shame that so many racers practice the art of douchbaggery. They are giving the sport a bad vibe.

I raced for a long time, I believe there is merit for putting your kids into a junior racing team for awhile. But once you get up into ussa level racing I just can't imagine doing it again. The place I skied at is rather well known for their training, but the people there are the most unbearable people I can imagine, the coaches were actually nice and I enjoyed practice sometimes. But the kids and the parents dear fucking lord. Im so glad my parents were only supportive to a point, I can't imagine the kind of shit that goes through some of these kids minds.

Damn its been like, almost a day since the last time I saw a "whats the deal with racers" thread. So stoked to see how much everyones opinions have changed since then...
jokes, lets stop making these fucking threads, its been discussed here many times. Let them smack there poles, just do what makes you happy skiing and ignore everyone else
Race courses and terrain parks are both artificial constructs. People have a whole mountain open to them and they lock themselves into small sections of it for large parts of their ski lives. Then they meet someone else who skis another small section of the mountain (the park) and they put out hate. You'd think they'd have more in common they do in animosity, but I'm sure a lot of racers should/could ski park pretty well if they tried but have been made to believe it's inferior (and vice/versa with park skiers going into racing.)
Check out Slalom Tokyo Drift if you want to see vids of racing falls (there's some gnarly shit.) Personally, if I was skiing in some area and I was more concerned about falling and how to avoid it, then I'd come to the conclusion that the area wasn't right for me.

I'm not necessarily saying skiing gates and bumps isnt fun because I still ski them quite a bit its more so just the attitude behind it. But that doesnt also mean every single racer is like that, I know some racers who are 10 times more badass than any park/freeride skier I know.
I raced before I switched over to park and big mtn... I think that the technique from racing (ie edge control, leaning into your boots) helps a lot. I raced at the USSA level, and by then there were the kids that took it way too seriously (carbon fiber slytech gear) and the kids that were good at racing, but liked to ski the whole mountain. The ones that say shit are the ones that take it too seriously. If they ever say shit, I'll challenge them to a chinese downhill.
Id say it's their upbringing as well. Definitely at the higher levels you need a fair amount of money to get all the correct gear. And so combine the pompous rich fuck attitudes of racers with the strict competitive mind set of racers then you just create a mega douchebag who can't appreciate anything.
Off course my statement was a huge generalisation and there's also cunts in the parks as well.

THIS. I raced from 4th grade to 7th grade for my mountain then raced freshmen and sophomore year in high school. In the time I did get better as a skier but I hated all the serious kids that had to win and had to have 3 pairs of thousand dollar race skis, while all this was going on my park buddies just skiied every weekend and got good at park and skiing in general with no serious racing experience at all...THEY JUST HAD FUN. So basically I wasted 4 seasons of skiing icey courses, hating my life and skiing about 3-5 hours of park a weekend.
My perfect example is my friend who started skiing in 8th grade he only went about 7 times that season, 9th grade already doing flats and backies, 10th grade he was doing 5's, rodeos, etc now were both in 11th and he is almost up to par with the "good kids" of the hill on jumps with good flip game and fun rail tricks and you know what.....He was skiing big runs at Alta with me no problem. Racing just gets you better faster but the process sucks ass. If the racers stay away from our park and not get mad when we cut them off, like at my mountain I'll stay away from their ice course of hell and we'll be happy.
I think little racer kids like to shoot off the sides of rail jumps cause they want to actually have fun instead of being forced to race by their fame wanting parents ha. All the same the it tears the jumps down pretty friggin fast..

I just think it is funny when I get the same times as them with beat twin tips and they shut up.

Yeah my parents made me do it (they want 2 sports a year) and I wish I raced on my park skis but I still am short enough to use old pairs from my race days but yeah kids laughed at the park kids for using park skis during races, I laughed at them for caring. Its stupid these days with racers and park rats. Just fuckin ski.

I raced USSA and took it seriously, but also had fun... I also did school races and those are a complete joke (I have friends that would ski them switch). I didn't even use race skis or wear a speed suit. The people that take school racing seriously are usually not even any good and their parents don't tell them the truth and the actually think they are good.

Yeah the only good kids in high school races are the kids who actually ski daily or race/raced for a real team, I juust tossed my bib over a hoodie and still beat the serious douches in GS suits just from my former race experiences, still hate racing, its not my thing.

skiing is fun. ski racing is fun. park skiing is fun. just go have fun. nastar is more geared towards tourists anyway....90% of people you meet ski racing will be nice to you as long as you don't go into your lift ride/whatever with the attitude that they will be a dick. if you are nice to them they will be nice to you, but as soon as you get all alpha with them, they're not going to take it well. you can make fun of their spandex all you want, but at the end of the day nobody really looks cool skiing (park skiers dressing like gangsters, anyone?). I also guarantee that if you see a decent racer, they have some level of love for skiing. Ski racing is an unreal amount of effort and commitment, and you don't work as hard as many of them do without love for what you are doing. I raced for a really long time, and met some great skiers and friends through it. no group should be condecending to any faction of skiing, were all doing it for the same reasons and the community is not big enough to isolate one group from another. I swear to god this is not unwarranted, when I used to race (particularly about five years ago) I would catch unreal amounts of shit from random dudes on the hill that i didn't even know just because I would rock race boots in the park on my days off, so of course I gave shit back to them. nobody likes to get judged because they can't afford or don't want an entirely different setup for FREEskiing. hell i even still get shit from randos sometimes for wearing my googles over my helmet....who the fuck actually cares about that shit? I'm just skiing. we should just all be friends. its much easier that way

Not gonna lie, not all of them are bad but most of them im not a fan of. I could not care less about ski racing though. To me skiing in the park and all mountain even skiing in general is about having freedom and going your own path and just enjoying it. Every time I asked my dad how his day at the hill was its either good or "the race team had 4 courses setup around the mountain" which is true, they do that all the time and their on the runs people like the most and my mountain has about 23 trails so its a bitch when they do.
Try spending a week with a bunch of "GroomONLY" types...they only ever want to do one run in the entire country, don't join in with the local culture and they think that back country is "a waste of time".

Same. At my mountain when it's a nastar day the whole front face is taken up by the races...and all the racers are on the same lift as us park people. Sets the stage for conflict.

Hell yeah dude, I sunk 12 years into racing or so before I discovered my first Freeze magazine at 19. Different times back then, but even though I loved hitting a course on race skis, the attitude just killed me.

everything about racing is "sooper ghey" you can't enjoy more than one type of skiing. don't even try. skiing is all about limiting your options
dude, tbh, I think there is MUCH more negativity from frescoers towards racers than the opposite xD Let's be honest most freeskiers won't be happy to go punch some poles with race skis on, but on the other hand, i've met a lot of racers who spend a lot of their ski times racing also occasionally getting a fat pair of skis out and shredding some pow, or even in 2 cases getting the twintips out and heading to the park.
I think it's fair enough when racers are good that they keep racing (at least in france) cos if they are able to keep that level, they will most likely pass their instructor thing (which in France is sooo fucking hard to get) which is a pretty useful qualification to have.
People who don't ski super regularly though, and race even though they know they'll never be able to reach a high enough level for serious competition or instructor degree, then they should definitely try out some real groomer skiing, some park and some pow. If they still ^refer racing, then fine by me, let people do whatever the fuck they prefer to do.
WHO THE FUCK CARES? At the end of the day, they are the ones being told how to ski while the rest of us get to go off and have fun with our friends. I'll let you decide who is the winner here.....
