Choosing a lens for some back counrty filming

I've recently been offered the opportunity to film some back country work, and am now looking to purchase a new Telephoto for the job.
The lens needs to be Canon EF mount, and am looking to max out at around 400mm.
I've mainly been looking at the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM Lens, so my budget is around $1700.
Does anyone have any experience or recommendations?
