Roof Rack

I need a way to transport my skis. I drive long distances to the mountain, because I (unfortunately) live a few hours from any ski hills. I want to get some kind of roof rack and I don't know what to get. My options are a box or the clamp style. I would only need to hold a pair or two of skis. The rack would only be used to cary skis, as my truck can carry everything and I just don't feel like having two sharp skis go flying in the cab should an accident or hard braking occur. I have heard that the clamps expose the skis to road debris, but I have seen so many people with skis outside the car, how bad can it be?

Personally I went with a box. I got one of the yakima loprofile ones and love it. I use during all season gives extra space cause the trunk area in my Forester is filled with subs.

Ya go for a box, that said I you are just doing day trips just throw them in the car, both racks and boxes are awful for mpg

Ya go for the box. After having my box for two season and seeing the salt that accumulates on the box, I wouldn't want that on my skis

yep, car is underrated. but i'd get a box if you had to choose between the two

i bought a rack a few seasons ago to transport stuff and be more carpool friendly. i didn't use it if there was a good chance for wet/salty roads. eventually i realized that since i always ride with boarders, there's no real good configuration for 3 boards and 1 pair of skis in a rack, so it's was really max 3 people in the ride anyways with half the back seat thrown down

Tossing them in the car would be great, but it just doesn't normally work for me. I usually ski with a large group of people, and we go go for weekend trips, so we have a lot of gear and skis just make the cramped trip even more uncomfortable. I think I will go for a box. I could also use it in the summer when I'm out on the beach, for wet stuff or fishing poles.
