Tips for a dramatic/cinematic type edit

So I'm making an edit for a school project. I'm trying to make the edit look as cinematic as possible and I'd like to get some tips on stuff like camera settings and angles. Everything helps. I'm a beginner at filming so I'm not expecting to get mind blowing video but whatever.

I'm using my friends Nikon D5100. also have a few lens options, and a tripod for stabilization.
These might not be the best gear to make a cinema look video but I'm trying to get as close to that as possible.

Slap on a vignette and crank the saturation to 106.

Don't forget to also adjust the tone way over to the blue side

The hard truth is that "cinematic" is the result of a vast umbrella of deliberate stylistic decisions and has almost nothing to do with your gear or post process beyond some basic level of treatment.

If you don't believe me, go on Youtube and look at all the short films shot with RED Epics that were surgically graded yet still give the impression of amateur drivel.

Are cold colors finally in vogue? Back in my day it was "warm this, soften that, Letus 35mm adapter blah blah blah..."

yeah dude, it's all about smurfing your cast now. the dude fucked up though. Everyone knows that you've gotta drop your contrast as far down as it can go for maximum cinema style shooting
