Replying to Noob needs a camera (which one tho?)

Hey everyone, so I am a complete beginner when it comes to photography. Currently I have a GoPro 3+ Black edition that I use for filming my park/ridge laps, but I am looking into getting a DSLR camera so that I can have more control over settings and such for video/pictures I take (on and off the mountain). I have tried to look around for what qualifies as a good "beginner camera" but keep hearing vague contradicting opinions. I would love to hear your opinions on what would be a camera that I won't hate after I learn the basics. Basically something that i can grow into. Any suggestions on brands/models?
