I'm looking to get some armadas on sale for next season. I pretty much ski everything and have been skiing for most of my life but I wanna try a fatter ski. I've narrowed my choices down to the ARVti and Al Dente but have yet to find a solid review of either so I am open to other suggestions. I am going to try and demo them next week but until then what would you suggest for all mountain skis that are fun to ride?
trevorschuwhat would you suggest for all mountain skis that are fun to ride?
I guess 'fun' is subjective. For some, fun means playful, for others fun is charging. Have you considered skipping the mid-width skis and going for a true fat ski? JJ for playfulness and Norwalk for something a little more solid. Both of these will do powder better than the ARV and Al Dente.
I would recommend the TST in 183/192 depending on your height/weight. Only the 183 was available to me when they first came out as a mid season release. The mid-width is perfect for every and all conditions. They are excellent in pow and steeps and solid if you like jumping off things. Not the best for switch but great for everything else. I just swapped in Atomic Trackers for STH16s but haven't gotten a chance to tour yet.
I also own 185 JJs and 182 Halos. I only use the JJs when there is 4-5+ inches of new. They are just too wide to use most days on Hood. The Halos when I feel like hitting jumps or just cruising groomers and riding switch, they are terrible in deep snow. I use the TSTs 75% of the time cause I can still hit jumps in the park and ride switch occasionally.
I've got a pair and they are fast - real fast on groomers. Really great cut and they can hold an edge faster than my legs can take it :)
I've not had the chance to get them into deep pow pow, but for a general smattering they are more than up for the job.
I use them as my "go to" when exploring around resorts/stuck with groomer friends - but for proper BC work I'd consider a pair of JJ's - they are incredible in the pow and can still cut it on the groomers/inruns.
I'd say try as many out as you can, always great to ride before you buy :)
Thanks for the tips. I mainly ski cords, trees and powder but also hit the parks pretty consistently. How are Armada all-mtn skis in the park and for buttering?
the arvti is a stiffer version of the al dente, the al dente is too so IMO for real skiing and i would prefer the arvti myself. also look into the 4frnt devastator it is similar dimensions to the ARVti and are super stiff and good for all mtn/ big mtn
