The Snow Situation

What is going on! To begin with the upper midwest didnt start out with much snow ever this year and now its all melting. I love to ski in 40 and above degree weather, but not now. Not already. Think of the Urban, the little backcountry that one hits here. Last weekend I am willing to bet I went on what may be my last semi legit urban adventure.

Regardless of the snow melting its super fun to shred when its warm. When the snow is soft and the hyph is real. Just wondering whats up with the snow conditions other places. I know some places closed but not sure of much else.

consider yourself blessed to be in Duluth, Minneapolis has had maybe 10 days where urban was possible. having unmotivated friends and problems from lack of snow, speed, and resources absolutely crushed my morale this winter.

The east coast had a bunch my local mountain will prob close around May. But bottom line is that global warming is fucking up skiing and really not enough is being done about it. Soon we prob won't get snow and winter will be gone if not very quick and above freezing throughout it, we will all being skiing on snowplex. I wouldn't be surprised if a couple generations after us never sees real snow, if there even is a generation that far after us.

1. record snowfall on the east coast this year
2. it always gets warmer in the midwest/mid east coast around early-mid march

It sucks that its melting but that just means it almost time to get the skateboards and motorcycles out. If you don't have a motorcycle buy one they are fun as fuck and make the summer more tolerable

Spring really hit hard this year. I'm pretty shocked. I was planning on skiing into April but most hills will barely make it through spring break (next week for me).
60 Degrees in March is not ok. We had a 9" storm in early March last year.

I'm not blaming global warming yet. A lot of the snow went SOUTH of Wisconsin and Minnesota. I think we are all just going bat-shit crazy because this year is so terrible.

The snow has been alright in the alps after a shitty start. At xmas there was literally no snow off the pistes, and my home mountain (verbier, 4 vallees) which is one of the biggest ski domains in the alps could only barely open a few pistes up in time for the holidays. Usually we have 100cm of base at this point. Kinda sucks, but we've had some great years before so I guess we get what we get. At least there's enough snow for the park haha.

sugarloaf has an 11 ft base which is unreal, but its been above freezing (like 45) all this week and 50 today so i dont know how long itll last. Winter is getting wierd. fuck pollution.

Just enjoy the snow until it's gone. The east coast had record snowfall and people still want to complain... Enjoy the spring conditions. There's nothing we can do about the weather so embrace it.

actually we can, its called trying to stop pollution. if we cleaned our atmosphere we would have better winters there is no question. Im not complaining because im enjoying the snow but all im saying is that if we want to have better winters in the east and west then there has to be something done about pollution.

You can't use a winters lack of snow as evidence of global warming. Last winter was one of the coldest a snowiest winters the midwest has seen in a very long time. Meanwhile Alaska was "enjoying" wayyyy above average temperatures. This year sucked for the upper midwest and west but was "good" for the lower plains and east coast.

There is no denying that snowfall total averages have dropped in certain areas in the country in the past years but it would be nothing but an uneducated assumption to say it is because pollution. How exactly do you know for sure when many meteorologists and climatologists don't even have definitive answer?

its because global warming is the only logical answer. Until some other theory is proposed stating why it seemed to be mainly spring temperatures throughout the west this year then that is what im going with. It may sound ignorant to put it that way but everything climatologists and meteorologists are saying about global warming and why the winter weather is not how it usually is makes sense.

The only logical answer? There were ice ages in the past, to the complete extreme of cold... so there is no possibility of a slightly warmer trend?

I couldn't disagree more, year to year weather is a horrible indicator of climate condition. If you look at the trend of the last 20 years, then yes, you can make a good judgement. I can safely say that at least in Russia weather has been getting progressively colder in general, but this winter has been a lot less snowy, and a lot warmer for the most part. It doesn't really mean anything, just smaller weather trends.

Well my resort in ohio said they will be open till april for park atleast. They are going to move all of the snow left after next week onto 3 trails and just have a ton of features. But we opened on new years day cause they didnt make snow with the early cold snap.

It's great that you've accepted climate change is real just like 99% of scientists, but cmon try to educate yourself a little. While there is a very visible trend of warming you can't take certain weather events or even a whole year of weather events and just say oh yeah thats global warming. You have to look at the big picture. Also, although the overall trend is towards warming, climate change causes extremes in all directions, so a region that ussually doesnt get much snow or cold weather getting a ton of snow and cold weather can be part of climate change as well. Also to say it is just caused by pollution Misconstrues the picture. Too often people think of pullution as like throwing a plastic bottle on the side of the road and stuff like that. The pollution were talking about greenhouse gases like co2 and methane.

Just to be clear I completely accept climate change and am just as at loss as op as to why our communtiy isn't doing more to raise awareness/make a difference in regards to climate change. I just don't think it helps us to move towards a solution if our understanding of the problem is based on misconceptions. It makes it easier to be a climate change denier if the problem is being presented by miseducated people.

Many scientists believe that the climate system varies naturally over a wide range of time scales, so that could help explain recent warmer temperatures. The greenhouse effect is a definite thing though.

I think this argument should be left to the people who know what the hell they are talking about. Climatology/meteorology and politics aren't exactly interchangeable. But who knows? Maybe Al Gore had a Ph.D in the field!

well obviously we are talking about greenhouse gasses, but i do get what you mean about how it causes extreme cold and more snow in some areas which is why i think the east coast got record snowfall and arctic temperatures this year. The reason for this is because scientists think that something (possibly global warming) is changing the jet stream which which would cause the fluctuations in the extremes, at least thats what i read.

Climate change is accepted by like 99% of the scientific community so it's definitely hard to argue against it. That said, it hasn't affected the earth enough yet to cause any major variations in the snowfall in an area so anything seen this season is just the result of random variation. The problem doesn't have any easy solution either. Cutting back on pollution here and there will barely make a dent on global warming. It would require major actions from governments all over the world and even after these actions had been taken, the effects would take large amounts of time to be seen.

Well I guess no year is "normal" while the Earth's temperature is rising as every year is slightly different climate than the year before but my point is that major variations in snowfall and climate like the OP is talking about are almost completely the result of random weather variation and not minuscule temperature changes from the year before.

You understand we're in an ice-age right now, right? Huge changes like this don't happen in a hundred years. They happen over millions. Global warming is the only logical answer. If greenhouse gas levels weren't rising like they are (as a result of human activities), there would be absolutely no reason for the temperature to be rising like it is.

In Maine at the start of this week we had an around town base of about 4.5 feet. Just this week we've lost about 1.5 feet. Spring slammed Maine hard up the ass.

This is true, but also remember that even a small amount of climate change can change whole biomes. We are talking a few degrees. Sadly there is no one and done solution that solves everything.

i've been real bummed out with the lack of snow this year too, but i went up to alta today and had a blast. I realized that skiing will always be fun even with terrible snow years like this one.

Stevens Passed closed today due to huge amounts of rain on such a small snow pack. Kinda butthurt that it happened like this, didn't even get an official last day :(
