Gapers now own twin tips?

Maybe i'm being a jaded dick about this, but it's really started to get to me. Sorry if I come off as a jerk

So, recently came back from a day of skiing, and for some reason, it seems like more and more kids are getting twin tippers. Mainly Lines, with some Volk and K2 in there. Nearly every kid on the mountain owned twin tips (Not a bad thing!), and were dressed up in their "park" apparel, and.... they all sucked dick. Like, really bad. Tons of kids were "gaping" it off the lips of jumps, knuckling 5 footers, basic gaper stuff. Nobody did anything really... Stylish... Robot 180s, 50-50 boxes. Although, some kid did spin a really shifty'd FS270 out on a rail, which I made sure to applaud. Same stuff thrown over and over, no progression really

My point here is not to bag on gapers, or to be all "i'm way better than them", i'm just seeing less and less steeze in the park, and more and more gapers who don't really do anything with park, just "in it for the scene". I don't know if it is just my mountain, or it is like this all around.

My main problem with this is that I think it's giving park skiing a bad name in a sense. When you tell someone that you ski park, do you want them to think about steezy tricks, big airs, and creative riding? Or do you want them to think about all the robots who all look the same who don't progress...

That's the end of my silly rant. Again, sorry if I come off as a jerk, just trying to get my point across better.

Why so butthurt?


Regardless of skill, if resort/hill owners see more and more people using their parks, they will keep investing money in them year after year. More people buying twins means companies will keep making them...and believe me, there certainly was a time when everyone was taking air off the sides of take-offs (maybe not us old folks that had to deal with "snowboard only" parks).

Just do your thing and don't care what the kids are doing!

I got my first twin tips this season and just assumed I would learn the basics of park and if not I would still be alright since they're not complelely park skis. Thankfully something clicked and I learned a ton. Guess I would have never been able to know if I didn't try. Was I a gaper though... Not really.

Soo recentley I fucked up my last pair of skis i have for the season, and im in need of a new pair. So i went to my local ski shop and i told them about my situtation, im super low on money right now and in debt so buying a new pair of skis was going to be impossible. One worker at the ski shop was kind enough to say hed offer a brand new pair for 300. I didnt have the money, so i said i would wait on it and come back tomorow. The next day I go to the store and the skis are gone. Another salesman had sold them to a kid just an hour ago. SO i went to my local ski hill to check out if they could hook me up with something... walking in a see the pair of perfect skis that were going to be mine right next to the biggest fucking gaper. He couldnt even ski.. im pissed

(Long Life story)
My first year I did "park" I had race skis and would only 50 50 disco boxes and hit 3 foot jumps and thought I was really good. I even had a GoPro. I then got on Newschoolers and realized that I was awful; (I live in Ohio and my home resort has to park talent at all). I then started to go to a resort a little further away from me and I bought volkl ledges with marker squire schizos (both 2014). That resort has amazing park skiers and they all taught me a lot. The most important thing they told me was that falling isn't something you can avoid by waiting to try something. This year (the same year as right above) I went from hitting 10 ft jumps to 40 footers and can slide rails. My main motivation to get better ironically is to not be a gaper with twin tips. If you are a gaper reading this, I would recommend getting some impact shorts if you are afraid to fall because the only way to get better is to learn from your mistakes (in this case falling). I can't even imagine what I will be able to learn next year.

Wow coming back to this I can really see the negativity in my post. Sorry

Anyways, I'm just saying it's kinda saddening when nobody's hiking rails or throwing sick tricks. It's not as great of an atmosphere in the park anymore, and I think that's what I was trying to get at. Of course, there's nothing that can really change that except wait for everyone to get gud.

Once again, sorry, didn't mean to sound like I'm beating on gapers, I was just kinda in a dip mood. I'm all for progression of the sport, and I wasn't looking at these "gapers" the way I should have. Gota have an open heart

totally get why you're pissed but there really is no reason for it, honestly. the gaper had more money than you, and was more able and willing to buy the product. that's just how shit works.

Doesn't really matter to me if they can actually ski. If they have shitty technique in AND out of the park, then they should stick to learning the basics instead of putting effort into their ski "style".

If you can rip mad super-G turns, and are a master of the bumps and steeps, then power to ya. Do what ever you want, it doesn't effect me in the slightest, haha.

Honestly the whole gaper thing pisses me off. Yes there are some who are asses and weave through the whole park. But don't be quick to judge. Broke 3 ribs, concussion, broken jaw on a gap to a battleship rail. Out for season. This year I start out with just 50-50 cuz honestly after that rails scared the shit out of me. But I got shit everytime I was there because I had chronics and some look bindings cuz I was a "gaper" and trying to fill in. Fuck that shit. Just got 2s back last week, but that still pisses me off. Just cuz your skill level doesn't meet your current gear level doesn't mean shit. Let people learn and put money into the industry /rant

did you read what i wrote, at all?

i completely agree the ski industry has changed in the last 5 years.
but not to the point where large manufactures are exclusively making twin tips and twin tips only.
which was the claim i was originally addressing.

i also dont think it has changed from selling 100k pairs of twins and 600k of alpine skis, to 600k pair of twins, and 100k of alpine skis.

yes, it will be really hard for me to prove this.
as mentioned in my previous post, that stat from 2010 was the only hard figured numbers i could find which actually showed statistical data of pairs sold.
can you prove to me that twin tips outsell alpine skis?
no, you cant.

its as simple as this.
walk into any non freestyle specific ski shop.
count how many twin tip models they have for sale.
now count how many non twin tip models they have for sale.
which do they have more of?
why?
more than likely they stock more nontwin tipped skis than twin tipped, because there are more nontwintipped skis on the market, which sell more often than twin tips.

you dont really need statistical data to understand the obvious, bud.

think about large companies that basically dominate the rental market.
think about how many pairs any given resort purchases each year.
you seriously think companies sell more twins than alpine skis?
im willing to bet they sell more "rental quality" skis than twin tips alone.
and thats not even beginning to look at whatever other non twintip skis they sell.

i admire your passion for freestyle skiing. i understand and share that passion. but dont let it cloud your judgement of whats real.

Everyone has to start somewhere. When I was a gaper kid I used to air off the knuckle because I was too much of a pussy to hit the actual kicker...

I guess style comes with balls and practice and when they get more comfortable hitting shit. Just be glad they're not on a snowboard.

its just the typical NS mindset that if someone has better gear than them, they are automatically labeled a gaper instead of someone who busted their balls off for a nice setup. this thread just reeks of jealousy.




Maybe a bunch of you should work a bit harder, save some more money, and you'll be able to afford all the gear these gapers own. not their fault they wanted a set of skis and were able and willing to buy them over your broke-asses.

A good way of knowing is if they call 3's or really any spin helicopters, Literally everyone i know who doesn't ski park calls them helicopters, so that's a good indicator. I'm not that good, i started skiing park last season, but i can do like 3's and 5's and switch-ups and 270's off and I'm progressing a lot so i'm not a gaper. Oh yeah and i don't call spins helicopters
