So I'm working in my first adult type job. I started out as shop bitch. Now I'm still shop bitch but I also run a cnc router along with some other machines. I make $12 an hour for working about 17-20 hours a week. I'm a full time student so this is just to help pay bills. This summer I'm definitely going to need full time. So my issue here is, how do you go about asking for more hours during the summer and letting them know if they don't give them to you, you're going to leave? I don't want to come off threatening, I just can't afford to work that little all summer. I have a few other offers for the summer that need an answer asap.

Just shoot em straight.

Tell them that you need more hours during the summer, when you aren't in class and see what they say.

Just because you don't get the hours, doesn't mean you have to quit. You can always pick up another job.

Don't make it a bigger deal than it really is.. Practice having the conversation before you go in and think about all the different scenarios and how you would react.

in the work world you always gotta do whats best for you. if you have a decent relationship with your boss you should be able to just tell it how it is. sounds like you already have some other jobs you could take? so the worst thing that could happen is they dont give you the extra hours and you already have a fallback job setup

.Hugo.in the work world you always gotta do whats best for you. if you have a decent relationship with your boss you should be able to just tell it how it is. sounds like you already have some other jobs you could take? so the worst thing that could happen is they dont give you the extra hours and you already have a fallback job setup


I just don't want to lose this job for next school year. But my boss seems like a good guy, but I work nights, he works days so I've only talked to the guy five or six times in six months. So that's why I'm a little hesitant.

This is some great life advice right here. When I first started working I was definitely shy when it came to speaking up about my needs. You gotta tell them how it is for sure! A lot of times these types of scenarios go over way better than you imagine they will. Tell them your needs and see if they can work with ya!

Don't beat around the bush. No one likes that. Just don't make it personal. Approach your boss and explain your situation. Tell him exactly what you told us. You are grateful for the experience and job he has given you. You don't want to give it up but due to outside circumstances you will have to get another job if he can't give you more hours.

I feel like most people would understand that.

This 100% for sure. My first internship I was getting shitty projects I never wanted to work on. I put up with the shit for a long time because I was just thinking about making my boss content, and doing what was told of me. Finally confronted her. She was totally cool with it and the only thing she said is that she wished I had brought it up earlier.
