Skiing with a DSLR

How do people ski with DSLR's? I have seen some great photos of people from the hill, about to drop, dropping, ect, like the photos from one of saga's recent blog posts, here and here. My concern would be taking a hard fall or tomahawking with the camera in my bag, even if it were a well padded camera bag? Everybody falls, even taking it easy.

How do people take great photos from the slopes?

DSLRs are pretty tough man. Ive seen plenty take hard tumbles and theyre just fine. Realistically you just don't fall, I ski around with cameras very often and you just have to be careful.

So basically, to ski with a camera means you can't be the one taking the big lines, on the big pictures? Thanks for the help.

I have only fallen once, it was a pretty bad one too, but my DSLR was fine

Danal.I have only fallen once, it was a pretty bad one too, but my DSLR was fine


How do you carry your DSLR? In a dedicated skiing specific camera bag, a regular camera bag, or just in your backpack?

Camera bag, dakine and burton make some affordable ones.

The Dakine Sequence bag is really nice, has tons of room for all your gear and provides a lot of protection. The downside is its pretty bulky and it takes a while to load and unload your camera. If you are just cruising the park and need instant access you can go with a chest holster:

Pelican case. I always ride with my camera in a pelican case in my backpack, and i have taken a few pretty hard bails, including falling off cliffs and landing on it. camera is still in perfect shape. Highly recomend them if you actually want to ski while carrying dslrs.

Normally I just put it on my glidecam and if I don't want to film anymore I put it in my bag in my car. I do have a bag I got on amazon. Just look up DSLR camera backpack.

At the same time, I've seen lenses break by switching filters. It can be finnicky as you know haha. Still, yeah, DSLR's are usually built-ford-tough. Even the cheaper ones are pretty good.

This. I still use my Dakine Sequence for in-bounds shoots.

When I just had two smallish lenses I used a fanny pack around my waist with the pack part in front. That way the camera is always accessible and if you crash you can ball up and protect the camera. Took some Nast tumbled with that and was fine. Now though I think I need to invest in a sequence, don't think I want to drop anything steep with a 70-200 banging me in the crotch.
