When old squid patrol gapers think you cant ski..

so me and the crew were mobbing around, jibbing everything insight.

we stop for a half second and this old gaper ski patrol dude stops us before were about to take off again.

so i yank off my headphones, assuming hes stopping to chew us out for ducking ropes (which we were ducking in and out of a ski cross course) lol

so then he starts going on about how "i bet you guys cant make these kind of turns blah blah blah follow right close to me blah blah i bet you wont blah blah lets see it"

so he takes off horribly slow and im right on his tail making these stupid dinky little tight turns. with me leading, we all follow directly in his little turn path making these rediculously small turns. no problem we rail these stupid little turns.

we go down the hill following him like he asked us, and we approach the only kicker the mountain has setup.

i give him a little spray, and ditch him to make a nice long carve over to the drop in of the jump. the crew then drops a couple dub cork 10s, lofty cork 3s.... jk jk.

so, ive heard a couple times here on ns how some park rats cant ski the rest of the mountain, so i had show this rather rude ski patrol gaper up. does anyone else have any similar experiences? also, how many of you park rats can lay down some nasty carves, hit some cliffs, and ski the rest of the mountain well? or do you just stick to the park?

Easily the worst part about skiing is when gapers are given some type of authority on the mountain. I was out the other day and first lap in the park this 60 year old instructor guy has his group of 5 year olds lined up underneath the second jump in a line of 3 (not visible from above). After I land, one cuts in front of me and I (being a nice guy) decide to turn instead of body check the kid and ski over the knuckle.
Next think I know "Larry" is screaming at me. Why you ask? Apparently it is proper "park etiquette" to wait for kids in the blind spot under a jump to roll over the back side than go off the knuckle and ski away.

I thought I was pretty good at skiing overall until I started going out to Mt. Hood in the summers. Mind you on the East Coast I consistently find myself to be one of the better skiers at most mountains I go to based of the crowd that day. But to be honest once I met kids who ride in Utah/Tahoe/Washington it was all over. They have such an advantage terrain wise it's just another level. You'd have to go deep North (Jay, Smuggs, etc.) and ski the hardest runs they offer all day 5 days a week to develop the same skill kids out West have.

Most of the ski patrollers that I have seen are not aggressive skiers at all. They are too cautious because their knees might snap if they go off a jump. The majority of baby boomers didn't start skiing when they were 3 years old like a lot of us.

Personally...My all-mountain skills are pretty damn good for a Midwest kid. I've realized that park is just not my thing, so I've been practicing trees,moguls, cliffs, ect. I'll throw 3's off of small natural stuff but I have a tough time landinng on man-made.

What I've never understood is why it matters. I can ride all over the mountain just fine, and maybe my form isn't quite as perfect as some of the guys who've been skiing 50+ years, but I can still rip all over and be just as (or more) in control than everyone else on the mountain. However years of park skiing and general fucking around on skis has changed my style so that I don't ski the mountain the same way as those old geezers perfecting their carves on groomers. Doesn't mean in any way I'm not as good or less in control than they are, just means I ski different. I've met plenty of older shredders who get that and think it's the coolest thing ever, but it still amazes me how many guys think that just because their carve looks better that they're a better skier or that I'm skiing 'wrong'

I hit park alot because I have two choices, one of the best parks on the east imo (Carinthia), or skiing groomers and some icy, flat trees all day.

Pow days are a different story.

How everyone outside of the park thinks at my mountain:


If you wear any park related clothing, you are a bad skier.
If you enjoy spending time in the park, you are a bad skier.
If you can do tricks, you are a bad skier.
If you aren't ripping mogul lines or running gates all day, you are a bad skier.
If you have twin tips with less than 92 underfoot, you are a bad skier.

In relation to other skiers hating on park skiers not being able to shred. At my local hill I do a variety of jobs and one of them is as part of the race crew (I do setup, timing, announcing etc.) despite the fact I've never raced a day in my life. One thing we do is a monday night race league where anyone can sign up, a lot of the people in it are guys who are out of college after racing for their school and now race there since they arent on a school team. Anyways one day I'm setting up the timing at the bottom and one of them gives me some shit about my baggy park rat clothing and how I "probably couldn't even do the course without falling". Anyways I did a lap for fun, baggy clothing, twin tips with dull edges from rails, no poles, and ended up only being beat by 6 out of over 30 racers. Best part was the guy who came at me fell on one run DQing himself, and on the other run fucked up so hard he was a solid 6 seconds behind me.

Lol this , my school board had a high school ski race team and my schools team was a bunch of park skiiers and we got hated on so much by the fucking racers( I don't mind racers just the who think they're the shit and better than everyone)

We got super fucked up and lapped park all morning while the rest of the teams warmed up and then ended up first on the school board and 2nd in the province. It was jokes as fuck.

This weekend theres a free ride comp at crested butte so yesterday i decided to spend my time skiing in the park because a lot of good places would be roped off leading up to this weekend. i had no poles, park skis, was rocking a baggy sweatshirt, the whole park look. anyway on the last run of the day i always do the same thing, for anyone who knows CB, its house rock into hot rocks where theres a few mellow drops and usually decent snow because of the sun hitting it most of the day. Im adjusting something at the top of the run when a kid who's competing in this comp comes up to me and goes "theres no rails over here bro. pretty sure the park is far away" i told him i do this run every day and i could easily find my way to the bottom twice as fast as he could. he agreed and i absolutely smoked him. i hope his bitchass sees this

I'm my gonna lie people like that are really stupid, in my personal opinion if you can ski park pretty decently your all around skiing skills are probably far better than the average skier. I don't ski much else because everything seems pretty easy idc if I can make long ski racing turns and do those gay tucks down the mountain all I care for is the park and some glade trails. if you can ski park pretty well you are a good skier idc what people say.

At lvssr you don't need any prior skiing experience to be a ski patroller.

the early in the season it's funny to watch the ski patrollers snowplow and do the pole-out-in-front-turning-thing and fall

I was ducking the rope to the park on this really empty day at my local hill with some ramdom guys who were pretty good and after a couple runs of the one patrol guy on the hill comes sprinting up screaming at the top of his lungs making this huge scene and amidst all the yelling in the next few minutes I heard him say something about how all people like us do is ride on rails and hurt ourselves just to be another problem for him and that we don't know how to ski. Either way he looked like Santa clause and everyone got a good laugh out of it.

does it really matter? if a ski patrol came up to me and said I bet you cant turn like me, I would laugh. I think to many people don't talk to each other enough on the hill. some ski patrol at my hill will ski park and hit shit too, and one of them is a babe!!! (ive seen here without goggles so I kno its legit)... would definitely follow her tight curves down the hill!

Lmao. This is true af. Racers on the east coast are so fucking terrible. I sware I would be able to probably win whatever races they have despite never having been on a team.

What most older guys don't understand is that the newer generation of skiing (park mostly) is that we have very good edge control and this is what these older skiers dont get. On multiple occasions I've done clinics working with other ski school employees where they expect me to completely suck at making turns, but on the hill they see that not only can I almost sit my hip down while carving and crush moguls. It's a pretty common and I know a lot of NS'ers also have this happen to them.

Yeah at my mountain the instructors actually take the kids through the park and say "watch out for the feature" I still havent spoken up but boy its coming since its been awful the past few days

It's fucking ridiculous and dangerous. Mtns on the east coast especially need to start mandating those ses park passes tht Stratton has b/c im assuming most gapers won't know enough to get them. I almost went to customer service about this guy but didn't want to waste time. Prolly gonna send something to them eventually lol.

The thing is even though my mountain is small, the run next to one park run use to be a park with a few rails but they stopped using it since its a green run for beginners but still the instructors go through the park next to it, theres also a lift with 3-4 runs, all greens just for lessons.

My first experience with ski patrol was when I ducked a rope to drop the big side of playground at brighton. Ski patroller saw me and waited at the bottom and as I was about to drop I hear (legitimately) "SEND IT YOU PUSSY!!!!" from the patroller. So I did, ate shit, and the patroller skied up to me. Thought he was about to get pissy and all he said is "I knew you wouldn't stomp it so I wanted to make sure you didn't get burried or kill yourself".

Second experience with patrol was also at Brighton and involved patrollers high fiving us for throwing naked backies directly under the milly lift on gaper day last year with a bunch of gapers riding the lift up. They then hot-dogged with us down the rest of the run.

You could say Brighton patrollers are the best.
