So I started skiing this year and right from the start after I learned to carve I went into park because the whole reason I started skiing was to freeski but when I started I never used poles and now I got some which I cut short but it just feels sort of weird having them like I can do the majority of grabs Ik with them but I can't do blunts which is annoying because they are my favorite and spinning with them is obviously no different but I think it looks pretty cool when you have them but at the same time I also like the no pole thing because it makes grabs a little easier because I can really grip my ski nicely and don't have the pole handle in the way and I think my style is decent without them I just think sometimes riding with poles looks pretty cool. Ik it's mainly personal preference as to what you like but I feel almost every free pro freeski er uses poles with the exception of a few like Phil casabon who is my favorite skier, or has used them for some of their skiing career and I think Phils style is cool. I'm just wondering if I should use poles for awhile as it might help my style if I ever decide to not use them in the future. I just really can't decide what to do.
Using short tiny poles won't really improve your style, if you were using proper length poles outside park it may help your technique, however style isn't really effected by poles or no poles.
If you don't like poles don't use em, if you like em sometimes and not other times just use em when you feel like it.
I know plenty of people who don't use poles and still have good style, you answered your own question with Phil Casabon.
In other words no.
You don't need poles to be stylish its mostly to do with appearance.
I honestly don't even like skiing with poles. Most of the places that I ride park at are pretty small and quick anyway so it doesn't matter a ton but even the longer runs I just feel better without them. That's just personal preference it doesn't really matter a whole ton just whatever is more fun.
When I don't use poles my hands always flail in the air and I look like some queer, but when I use poles it keeps my hands where I need them. Really the only skiers that can pull off no poles is Henrik and Phil.
I have net used poles for 2 seasons now. Ive just gotten used to hitting powder and all mountain with out them and its awesome. If how ever i bring poles out i usually put them on the racks after a lap or 2 cause they just get in the way for me. It always seems like my balance is way off if i use poles.
I have been so on off this season regarding poles. One day I really want to go with poles and then 5 minutes after I'm done skiing I'll think "Yeah I'm going without poles next time". Just do whatever you feel like that day.
I used poles for about 7 years until I broke my hand last season and couldn't hold them. I still skied without them and haven't used them this season so far.
