The thing i use most is the audio levels in live view and the timelapse definitely. Focus/focal peaking can be useful too but i dont use it much.

Before I start filming I turn on Zebras to get the color in the right zone then I'll turn it off once done. I also use it to do non native shutter speeds for video. I have audio monitoring on screen as well. I also use it to adjust white balance and iso.

remember to turn stuff of when not using it, it can be anoying to have to go back and turn stuff off from the previous shoot (unless you use the same things every time)

the intervelometer that ML has will be nice for time lapses, and there are lots of helpful tools ML gives you like more iso's, focus peaking, magic zoom, and audio metering.

I would make sure you've completely maxed out what you can do with your existing hardware/software before resorting to ML. I know a lot of people swear by it, but you have to really follow their instructions to a tee.

It's still really easy to install.

I understand that, but there are plenty of bricked cameras lying around out there. I know it's rare, but it you don't know exactly what you're doing it could happen.

I see it as essential for us still shooting with Canon DSLRs for video. Read everything very carefully; watch a bunch of videos. It is very easy though. I have installed it on 4 different cards over the years.

Ok go ahead and keep downvoting my posts. The best post in here was the first one. OP doesn't seem like he is too deep into shooting and filming yet so why should he mess with ML? And all of you in here hating better be shooting in RAW, because if you're not then did you really "need" ML? Does OP even understand the ramifications of shooting RAW and all he'll have to do to change his workflow, and if his computer can even handle it.

Sure zebras, peaking, etc. CAN be useful, they aren't necessary. Most high end prosumers using ML want it for the RAW image, not all this stuff that you might need if you're weak at filming.

Saying that ML features are for people weak at filming is bullshit. Have you ever tried to focus or expose a shot on a DSLR screen? It can't be trusted. And don't even joke about the automatic gain. ML allows a filmmaker to work quickly and easily on a DSLR.

I'm on a T2i. It can't cache/record the frames fast enough to shoot in RAW. I see Magic Lantern as essential because it allows you to use 160-320-640 ISO levels, exact Kelvin white balance, manual audio controls, exposure controls (focus peaking, zebras, waveform), and, most importantly, a built in intervalometer. The built in intervalometer allows me to shoot awesome timelapses without extra equipment or hassle, and even calculates the final length of the compiled video for you.

There are also other, more advanced options. If shooting Cinestyle, one can turn up the liveview contrast to see what the finished product will look like, whilst still recording a flat image. The built in crop marks are also helpful in shooting for a wide aspect ratio in the edit.

Definitely get it. Super simple, just follow a youtube video tutorial.
