Blake.PJimmy page. His work with Zeppelin is almost untouched. Definitely one of the most versatile guitarists (listen to bron-yr-aur stomp then rock n roll to see the differences)
JOYSTICK*know your roots, bert jansch is a person worth looking up, here's the legend much later in life;

theabortionatorThe night they drove old dixie down is one of my favorite songs. Always wanted to learn it on piano. I just want somebody to teach me that one song.
Fuck that's a great song. The night or night after levon died I saw the heavy pets and dopapod in noho mass. The guitarist from dopapod came out and did the night they drove old dixie down solo for the first encore. Really intense.
Wish I had made the ramble when moe. played in 2010. Couldn't even buy a ticket, not surprised.
Luckily got to see him one last time at moe.down 2011. Ended with the weight. Bobby sang a verse, levon sang a verse, then everyone sang. I think there was a light rain and it was just magical.
Huge tangent and unrelated to guitar but that's where your post led me.
las.It's just a shame that a large number of the songs he openly claimed were his were actually direct plagiarisms off old folk and blues tunes. The reason he may sound so versatile to you is because most of the driving melodies and grooves within his songs (including Bron-Y-Aur Stomp) weren't his creations.
It's funny Bert Jansch has been brought up because he was one of Page's main targets for material theft. I understand the whole artistic influence and one's own interpretations sort of thing, but the difference with Jimmy Page was that he not only didn't credit any of the people he ripped off of, he straight up refused to when those original artists and their labels approached him about it. By then, too, Led Zeppelin were large enough to take on and quash any legal action against them, and Page knew that. It's unforgivable, in my opinion
lIllII'm so sick of people bitching about Led Zeppelin's "plagiarism." It's completely ignorant of American musical history (let alone art in general) to impose such a futile standard, especially when then genre of music in question has a grand total of 5 notes to pick from. And I say this as somebody who can't stand Jimmy Page.
Besides, where are all the people castigating every popular hip-hop artist ever to exist, who by all means actually plagiarized their music? Don't even pretend that the entirety of 90's hip-hop wasn't essentially dudes rhyming over Isley Brothers samples that were shamelessly kept in their original form.
las.You're missing the crucial point here. If you're going to copy/paste or "interpret" someone else's music, you must NOT claim it as your own completely original composition, and you MUST credit those who you've "interpreted" from. Jimmy Page is a slimy rat who ignored and broke both of those unspoken rules, and basically said fuck you to anyone who challenged him over it. That's what bothers me, and many other people

will_powderYou guys know guitarists exist past 1975 right?
MuckMaestroFantastic song. The Band is my favourite and they definitely wouldn't be who they were without Levon. All of the songs they did at The Last Waltz were amazing.
I suggest trying to find a copy of the DVD, them and their guests are amazing. They are joined by Van Morrison, Bob Dylan, Neil Young (high as a kite), and others.
Spagett+Probably Brian Wilson of the beach boys. I don't even care if he didn't plat guitar he was a better musician than everyone in this thread combined so he wins all competitions.
