So here's my number one. Probably not the best ever technically or anything, but Dream Theater are one of my favourite bands so I'll have to give the shout to John Petrucci.

The fact that Butler is doing that on a 12 string is insane, but my favourite fingerstyle guitar player is Antoine Dufour. I'm not sure I've heard anyone whose playing is as clean and clear.

The original axe ripper, Django Reinhardt. Check out his left hand; the last two fingers got fused together as a result of horrible burns he got in a caravan fire when he was a kid. As a result, he had to learn a ton of alternate fingerings and came back and tore it up harder than ever, with one less finger than everyone else.


Obviously everyone else in this thread slays, but Django is the granddaddy of modern guitar slayage.
I think Stevie Ray Vaughn and Pat Metheny also deserve places in this thread.

The night they drove old dixie down is one of my favorite songs. Always wanted to learn it on piano. I just want somebody to teach me that one song.


Fuck that's a great song. The night or night after levon died I saw the heavy pets and dopapod in noho mass. The guitarist from dopapod came out and did the night they drove old dixie down solo for the first encore. Really intense.

Wish I had made the ramble when moe. played in 2010. Couldn't even buy a ticket, not surprised.

Luckily got to see him one last time at moe.down 2011. Ended with the weight. Bobby sang a verse, levon sang a verse, then everyone sang. I think there was a light rain and it was just magical.

Huge tangent and unrelated to guitar but that's where your post led me.

Jimmy page. His work with Zeppelin is almost untouched. Definitely one of the most versatile guitarists (listen to bron-yr-aur stomp then rock n roll to see the differences)
