How do some of the ski films get around using royalty free music

Currently making a full length film here (different sport) that will be sold. How is it that companies like level one and poor boys use the music they do. I cant imagine them paying for copyrights like most hollywood productions do.
Anyone have any insight, do ski films fall under fair use???

ski films do not fall under fair use.
i don't know for sure what the ski companies do but it is likely there would be some form of compensation paid for the rights to use the song for commercial purposes. whether it be a royalties scheme, one time payment etc im really not sure.
if i were in your shoes i would look for some lesser known artists whos music i like (soundcloud or youtube is a good place to start) and message or email them explaining what I wanted to do and see if they would give me rights to use the song commercially. if they are lesser artists they may do it just to gain some additional exposure.

Yeah, the real ones are getting it licensed legit-ly. A snowboarder I used to work with explained it some, film crews have a music budget, and in his case he was actually allowed to choose the song for his part. Sometimes they'll actually work with the artist if they happen to know them to cut a deal. Otherwise band camp, premium beat and sites like that are probably your best bet
