What to do after high school?

So, much like a lot of you, I have a major passion for skiing. I'm only a sophomore in high school so i have a lot of time to think about it but i want to have a little bit of an idea for myself.

I live in Minnesota and wanting to go to college in Colorado to pursue being a owner of a ski shop. But also being some type of ski engineer sounds like something down my alley. So this is just a thread asking what you people have done after high school or after college that has had something to do with the great sport?

I am in literally the exact same situation. Except I live in NY. But I'm thinking about going to college in Colorado or Utah.

It's pretty tough to ski in college. I go to University of Calgary thinking that I'd be able to get up to the mountains a bunch over the season.
In high school I would get to the mountain 3 or 4 days a week. \
But in my first year I only got about 10 days at louise during the school year (I go back to whistler for christmas and reading break), and this year I have only got 5 days so far. Unfortunately in my case school has become too important and expensive to include skiing in my lifestyle as much as I would like

Why the fuck does everyone want to go to school in Colorado? It makes no sense to me that places like CU ans CSU are considered ski schools

Have you thought about becoming a ski mountaineering guide? There's this guide school down in Chile that I'm applying for once I've finished high school, idk just a thought

I'm interested in Colorado mountain college. The photagraphy school is in Aspen I believe.

CU actually has the biggest ski and snowboard club in the entire US..

I was almost exactly in OPs shoes 7 years ago (even from MN), thought I would share some of my wisdom.

I went to Marquette for 4 years and graduated with a BS in mechanical engineering. While I was at school, I very rarely made it out skiing. I went just a couple weekends during the semester, but during the breaks I would ski just about everyday.

Coming out of college, you need to be making money. A good degree with good grades will help a lot. As a mechanical engineer I can say I've been pretty comfortable paying off student loans and affording my expensive hobbies (skiing of course being one). Career-wise I am very happy with where I am and I still love skiing and get out often (except when I'm injured... stupid kneecaps)

Now, it's good to have dreams, but getting a well paying job in the ski industry is very unlikely, and usually means less actual skiing.

Go to a good college that has quarterly system, take off your winter quarter to ski and go to school in the summer. No teacher wants to teach in the summer, so the class's are easier and it's a great opportunity to get through the non important ones. Best choice I ever made.

Doing college online is always an option, as well as CLEP exams. With CLEP exams, you study yourself, and take tests at certain places to get college credits to graduate at a college that'll except them. It's hard to explain, but read into it. That's what I'm doing and it allows me to travel where ever I want (almost), while still being able to work on getting my bachelors degree in audio engineering. It also costs nothing compared to most college tuitions. Seriously, look into it!

After high school, I moved out to a place closer to my local mtns. I work as an electrical apprentice, getting off work at 3 everyday. My local mountain is open until 10pm everyday, so I can still manage to go skiing most days after work... except this year, cause there's no snow :(

The main question is really whether you'll head off to college or not.

I know a number of people that have pieced together college over six years, taking semesters here and there. I scrunched it all together and just got it done in three. Either way, there's plenty of time to go skiing, and just figure that into your plans as to the school you want to go to.

If not, you can go anywhere. Lots of hills have housing programs for employees, and you could do something like ski patrol where you're actually riding on the clock, or working hard in the bar making drinks or serving food after pillaging pow all morning. Start sorting out your options and see what you can find.

Whatever you do, leave home for a while. Go see something new, and you'll appreciate what you had that much more. Make some ski friends, and enjoy yourself.
