Go Pro for Filming.

Hey guys,

I am currently filming with a d5100, 8mm rokinon fisheye, cam caddie, and a takstar shotgun mic. I originally got this setup for filming skateboarding and it has served me pretty well. However now that I am getting more into filming skiing I need some advice. Though I don't have the most expensive setup, I baby my camera. Because of this when its snowing I cant film. Also because of its large size I cant really bring it onto the mountain for casual filming. This means that I have to go into the lodge and deliberately film for a while and I can't do anything on the way to the lift because I am carrying a camera. This is very annoying as I would like to film some casual clips with a decent quality (not phone), and little to no setup per shot. So my question is: will a gopro satisfy my needs.

tl;dr will a go pro be good for casual filming, but stilol give decent results.

once you get used to a dslr a gopro just doesnt seem to cut it.

I would suggest picking up a pelican case. I have a canon t4i and i can fit the body and one lens in a pelican 1150 (provided i take the lens off the camera and keep both capped). i always ski with this in my backpack, and i never have a worry that the camera will get damaged. Pelican cases are shock proof and water proof, sounds like exactly what your looking for

I almost only film with a hero 3+ silver and it does the job. Also something I'm willing to take over jumps to get shots. Plus they're really cheap as far as cameras go.

Do it, I wasn't using my gh2 enough for the same reason. It was big/bulky/a hassle to film with. It gave an awesome image, but I was rarely using it. Picked up a gopro 4 black and I love it. I still have a 5dc for photos, and once I graduate school and can film more, I will likely get something like a 5d3 as a photo upgrade and to film with (maybe something else though, who knows what will be out in 1.5 years). With how little I can film, and how casual we are about it, the gopro is perfect for me. Not for everyone, not a perfect camera, but perfect for my situation.

You can't film an entire edit with a gopro, but they are cool for a few different shots.
