The two breeds are totally different types of cats - do you want a friendly laid back lap cat or an adventurous loner type cat?
Persians are the friendly lap cat but they are notoriously difficult to look after. They require daily grooming and you have to spend a lot of time (and sometimes money) keeping their coat tidy. Their litter box needs to be cleaned every time they use it (more than once a day) and they have some specific health needs, not to mention the amount they shed! They look great and love human attention but they aren't they type of cat you can just leave to look after themselves.
Norwegian's don't require as much grooming but they are a big domestic cat so they cost more to feed and will need a bigger indoor space. If you plan to let him/her out you better live in a good neighbourhood because Norwegians are rare and are often stolen! They generally aren't affectionate so won't be sitting on/with you - they just see you as someone to feed and groom them.
If this is your first cat and you're choosing between one of these two breeds just because you think they look 'cool' then really consider your options beforehand. Short haired cats are much easier to look after and more fun than the above two breeds. If you absolutely must have a pedigree then take a look at British Shorthair or Burmese. If you still want a Persian or Norwegian, I'd personally go for a Norweigan.
Wow thanks! Definitely after a Norwegian then. I want a big crazy animal that doesn't care about me, and just lives it's animal life. Sounds like a Norwegian is the closest I'll get to that with a cat. Leprechaun sissy for life!
