Line Afterbang Skis Sanded Down and Refinished

About a year ago or so I bought these Line Afterbangs off my buddy. For the most part I have been really enjoying them but after a while the graphics started to bother me a bit just because they were a bit to "loud" So I decided to tone them down a bit.


I decided to take of the top layer by taking an electric sander to the top sheet until it was completely gone and was only a Blank wood design.



After taking to top sheet off they were looking a bit dull and faded so I took some wood varnish I found a work and applied it to the ski making it look more glossy and darker.





I then put 5 coats of lacquer on the new top sheet to protect wood top sheet form liquid and other damage. I also thought it would be a pretty sweet idea to spray paint my bindings because they were starting to look pretty beat up so I gave them a black matte colour. After I spray painted the bindings I followed up by covering them with 2 clear protective coats to make sure the black colour would last.



Here is the final product!
I am really happy with how they turned out and cant wait to bring them up the hill!

I want to do this when I retire my abangs. They're already delaminating after one season so it might not be too distant in the future.

I did the same this fall! Super easy to take the bindings off and shit but sanding was a bitch. I had 2011's in the green shade. The graphic came off easily but the green dye from the paint was deep in the wood. I'm pretty sure I used 80 grit sand (super coarse) and it took me forever. I eventually go down to the real colour of the wood but there was still some ugly patches of green that did not wanna move. I then used a hand held circle sander and used the edge of it on the green patches. Once they were full down to the natural wood, I taped up the binding drill holes and used a matte finish, exterior use, Varathane branded spray. I did about 4 coats, leaving 30 minutes between them. What I noticed about the matte spray is that it came off super fast. I think the rough surface caused the layer of spray to catch on more and rip off. Everytime I got snow on them, they'd get wet which had me terrified that they'd rot. So later on this winter, the temperature was warm enough to be able to spray them again. I then used the same brand but in a gloss and they dont chip or get wet anymore!! If anyone has any questions or wants some help , slide into my pmzzz

Does anyone know how well plasti dip is when applied to a park ski topsheet? Does the coat chip easy from rails (even if I apply a lot o light coats)

Nice job, I had a few pairs of the old space frame 1080's back in the day, thought they were hideous so I spray bombed them flat black and then gave them a number of clear coats. It actually held up really well until the skis disintegrated

I think it might not work as well on most other skis because the afterbangs are wood. It just might be a little harder.

Any "sandwich" type construction im pretty sure. I think some k2s have it.

Although you can obviously repaint any pair of skis, sanding the graphics off of anything other than the skateboard style construction i.e. the afterbang would be a very bad idea and likely ruin your skis. they're made of layer upon layer of wood just like a skateboard so no batter how much you sand them it's just more wood underneath (until you reach the base and edges). on pretty much every other ski there will be a combination of any of the following: wood, metal, fiberglass, carbon etc. basically shit you don't want to mess with and if sanded off would definitely compromise the integrity of the ski.

I feel like it will definantly chip. My buddy plastidiped his emblem on his car but then he didnt like it so he just peeled it off
