Yeah, definitely a good idea. Theyre pretty reasonable as far as price. I wouldnt bother if youre just skiing back bowls at resorts though, or even passes where theres roads around. If youre in the deep BC DEFINITELY get one.

if you plan on skiing out of bounds with another person that owns a beacon and ski anything decent you should get the beacon. they dont let you in the backcountry at baker without one.

you also need a probe and an avy shovle. it is great if you find your burried friend, but it is nice to be able to dig them out. also the U offers a level 1 avy class for credit. also very highly recomended.

^ i will have to check the class out. yeah i just assumed if you had a tracker you would also have a shovel and a probe. I was planning on taking a few classes when i got out there but its nice to know that the U offers them

Yeah im taking the avy course this semester, and to whoever said if you're just skiing back bowls don't worry about it, tell that to the people who die in slides around here every day. You could even get buried inbounds although unlikely

i have poles by black diamond that are extendable and they come apart and screw togethor as a probe, but i think its better to just get a regular probe.

Couple of ignorant comments in this thread for sure. Don't really feel like getting into it, but ignorance is the biggest danger out there. If it's steep enough to ski on, it's steep enough to slide, as the old saying goes.

Take your parents up on their offer. BCA tracker is the best one to learn with and use. The avy class at the U is good stuff too.
