New Feature to test: Alerts

We've got a little something we'd love some help testing. Don't get overly excited yet, as this is just a really small part of the groundwork for something NS has needed for a long time. As well we recognize we need alerts for way more stuff. However, we need some of you to assist with throwing some weight at it so we can smoke test.

We have built an alerts (read:notifications) system. It doesn't do a ton, but is shaping up to be cool.

Steps to enable:

-Go to your "account settings" (link up top in the orange box)
-Scroll to bottom and enable "Alerts Beta" (you will have to do this on any new browsers you use)
-Refresh the page
-3rd box down you will need to update your email address and choose to subscribe to email alerts

Would love as many of you as possible to try this, and let us know how its working for you. Again, it will be missing a lot of functionality that you want - and we're not sure how long it will take us to add that stuff - but its a pretty cool start.

This is actually extremely cool. When you click on the thread it brings you to the exact spot where your post was quoted.

Yeah, we really wanted to make it a lot easier to find where people were quoting you.

If we can pass this initial round of load tests on the servers then we can start building this up to do a lot more.

Thanks everyone for your help testing, the initial parts of this have gone outstandingly well. We will be launching the initial beta version live to the public later this afternoon.

I've been waiting for something like this. NS is starting to feel more like a legit social media site rather than a host for freeski culture. Big ups. Almost time to drop an app, only suggesting that because I'd love to get NS messages as notifications on my phone and be able to reply quickly.

Ar first i was pissed because i had hundreds of alerts and didnt want to click on all of them to get rid of em. but then they all magucally disappeared so im happy, thank you jeebus

Just because I click on one thread I don't want the rest of my notifications to go away. Having all notifications go away after one click kills the point of notifications

I like it. Only issue is that I'll log in and there will be sooo many fucking alerts. Makes me feel popular though so its ok

We haven't launched it everywhere on the site, and if it gets overwhelming, we'll also give deeper customization to them.

Also, to anyone that finds the email alerts too much, you can easily turn them off here - https://www.newschoolers.com/ns/members/profilesettings

You can as well update your email address that they send to if you wish.

OK - we're going to try a public beta release. You'll still have the ability to turn off the email notifications in account settings. We'll see how this goes, and if there's no major issues we'll make it permanent and start working on other aspects.

You can turn those off in your account settings. There's a link in the bottom of every email as well.

This is so tight, I'm super hyped on this, it's a huge step into making the site even more interactive and sucking away even more of my life..... I'm assuming I'd get an alert if someone added feedback on my profile? Only thing I can think of that I haven't been able to test yet

Yeah sorry not yet.

We had to only enable it for a small subset of features on the site in the first version. It will take time to get it implemented into more but we will be working on it.
