How many people on here in stocks?

Wondering how many people on here have some money in the stock market, whether it be a mutual fund, hedge fund, or just directly in individual stocks. I also have some questions about how you go about investing in stocks yourself. You do it through a trading service online right? And they just take commission from all the stocks you buy? Or is there a cheaper way to eliminate that middle man?


I'm pretty new to this so if someone would give me their personal experience I would appreciate it.

I have some shares of Tesla that I own as a long term investment under my fathers account, we're going to transfer ownership when im 18. I know through our service there's a middleman fee as well as a tax proportional to your income.

I would never take money advice from people on here man. I just want to learn more about different investments. But I take it all with a grain of salt

You must have bought when it was trading at 98 bucks a share.... Just cost average it. They're on pace to close the year at 68 bucks a share.

My portfolio is diversified as such:

Schlumberger
Apple
Procter & Gamble (paid for my college)

Not exactly a full portfolio right now... But it's doing its job right now.

A kid in my school got into stocks sophomore year, then dropped out junior year because he felt he didn't need a diploma. He has a mercedes and bmw now at the age of 18 and they are his, not his parents'. A little drug money, but mostly from stocks. he sells a little devils lettuce

I suggest reading this book, OP. Pretty dry read, but there's a lot of great info in there regarding the market and different investing strategies.

I just DLed the app Robinhood which is a commission free stock trading app. I haven't purchased anything with it yet, but the reviews all seem to be really good.

I have the robinhood app (free stock trading).

I have put some money into 3d printing and am watching apple/tesla. They are a bit high and I'm not rich yet. I'm also watching chipotle because I can't believe it's trading at $600+ a share. Fucking burritos.

Does the app cost money? You say free so is there no commission taken out for every trade?

It's free. You can buy 1 share of 5 different stocks and trade them every day, but only US stocks. No commissions are taken. They make money by charging for other things like if you want a paper statement, it will cost you $15. If you want advice or to chat with someone, that will also cost you.

I don't think you can use paypal. They linked with my bank account and I can transfer money over to the app when I want to. I started with $5 just to test it out. I've put in a fair amount more since.

The only thing is that there are around 200,000 people in line for the app right now. I got my invite around a month ago. I think I got on the list back in September.

I also have Robinhood and I have like $300 in my account that I'm just messing around with for the time being.

Also the only reason Chipotle is trading so high is because they have such limited shares available. High price != good stock. That being said, they have gone up like $100 in the last year so it might be worth watching. It's just so damn expensive that it takes a whole lot of money to trade any reasonable amount of it.

If anyone wants to give Robinhood a try but you don't want to wait on the like 200k person waiting list, PM me or post in this thread and I'll send you a link for an invite to skip the line. I have like 10 of them

You do realise that the purpose of diversification is to reduce unsystematic risk yet two of your investments(Apple, P&G) have a positive correlation, thus both being susceptible to the same economic factors..



Anyway, I don't have much invested in equities. Compliance makes it too much of a hassle: 30 day holding periods, trading bans due to non public information - and that's only if they clear a trade. So it's just not worth it because the company's restriction list is too big. ETFs and mutual funds have no restrictions so them and some higher-yield fixed income is where I put my money.

I'm confused by this statement...

Proctor and Gamble is a multinational manufacturer of product ranges including personal care, household cleaning, laundry detergents, prescription drugs and disposable nappies.

Apple designs, develops, and sells consumer electronics, computer software, online services, and personal computers.

Please elaborate.

I actually used to work as a portfolio manager at UBS... ended up getting laid off 8 months ago. Finance was too stressful in the long run, I would not recommend making a career out of it, even if you have the opportunity*. If you are really interested in investing, I would check out commodities, all I am going to say is Palladium prices will skyrocket in the few months.

Because even though both companies offer different products, they both sell consumer goods. So any factor that affects the market for consumer goods will theoretically affect both companies.

Or am I getting systematic and unsystematic risk confused? If so, sorry, I need sleep.

I've been at it for about 6 years now, built up a pretty diverse portfolio ranging from big tech companies to small energy ones.
OP my advice would be to put 1/3 to 2/3 of your money into etf index funds such as SPY, they'll perform the same as the broader market and trade easily like a stock.

Been inv3esting for quite a few years, only really in high risks stocks though, got killed when oiled dropped recently though, but my gold prospecting stocks picked up the slack luckily

You're totally right. And platinum is super cheap right now too! It's cheaper than gold (so like $1,200 I think) and a couple years ago it was up at $1,800

No you can buy as many shares as you want. I think she was just giving an example of how with no commissions, it doesn't matter if you only buy 1 share, while if there was an $8 trade commission then it wouldn't make sense to just buy 1 share.

If that is the reason why you won't buy chipotle you have a lot to learn. That is such a stupid reason the stock has massive liquidity. Chipotle is an amazing company I own chipotle and am very long it. Great business model and the company is thriving. Then again I bought in a few years back.

For me personally I invest with a value strategy. So thats what I read. But I read a lot of books. Just google some top rated finance books to get the brain flowing. Stocks aren't necessarily supply vs demand as you mentioned above. A stock that costs $500 can be cheap compared to a stock that costs $10. I would study how to read financial statements, learn what metrics you judge companies on based on the way you want to invest. Its a lot to learn. Im involved in it everyday for work and its something I love.

#1 misconception among new investors is to look at the price of the stock. The current dollar figure literally does not matter at all!! 10 shares of a company at $10 is the exact same thing as 4 shares of the same company at $25

I hope you didn't buy 3D at it's highs. I made a lot of money on DDD during its run up.

Robinhood is a great platform if you have a Iphone, but I'm one of the few who doesnt. I have an account with a few stocks and mutual funds for long term holds, and then an etrade account for swing trades to supplement my surf trips. Just booked a plane ticket to Nicaragua for my wife and me off CRIS profits :) Now hoping NVAX keeps climbing to pay for our trip once we're down there. OP, I'm certainly no expert, but have been trading for a few years, so feel free to message me with any questions.

I would be buying it because coal is the most plentiful energy source that we will turn to after oil skyrockets, not because it's cheap


the company I'm looking at is the 2nd largest producer of coal in the US. I think it's worth a shot, but for now im only putting $100 in

thinking of screwing around a bit and buying a share of PEPSI, and sell it sometime this summer.
My theory is that with the return of Baja blast, real sugar PEPSI, and do us a flavor, I'm sure that those promotions will drive the price up.

My advice in that case is invest in a smaller coal company, higher risk, but far higher return
