Dogs have aptitude over cats. Also I feel they are more aware of human companionship. Cats are more wild in nature and are more independent and can stray from obedience. Genetics have clearly made cats have more independent hunting capabilities. I feel the bigger the cat the bigger the attitude. Dogs are packed hunters and we as an owner are the pack leader. So... Even with the size of a dog, we can show pack leadership.
Dogs were domesticated from wolves through selective breeding to serve a purpose. Basically, take the ones that are nicer to humans and keep breed them. Take there offspring and repeat.
Cats more so just started showing up and hanging around because it was an easy life. There wasn't really widespread selective breeding happening until recent times (~200 years or so). Up until then, there was really no control and they would often breed with other wild cats. Thus, cats are truly only semi domestic at this point.
To answer your question:
There are no big domestic cats because it would take many generations of selective breeding before they'd stop eating people.
there's actually a cat named the Savannah cat that is like 50/50 domestic and wild cat. it looks like a cheetah mixed with a normal house cat. they're pretty expensive, can jump really high, and have a crazy meow. also have the same name as me so naturally I want one lol

Damn...those things look cool I want one now! I've only ever had one cat and he was a bad ass stray cat we found as a kitten during a hurricane and he was awesome so I wouldn't want to have a wimpy quiet indoor only cat.
I've always thought it would be awesome to own a tiger, lion, or some other large cat, but more domesticated. Fact is it's a lot of work plus it's a giant cat. I grew up owning cats and man sometimes they just flip their bitch switch, and I can only imagine that on a larger scale not ending in good results.
Just imagine how badass it would be to have one of these though. No one would fuck with you or your house.
the biggest difference is that we have been domesticating and breeding dogs for way longer, like thousands of years longer, than cats, and so cats havent had the major changes that dogs have had-- the physical and mental aspects of a house cat arent that different from a wildcat
you can get hybrids that are half domesticated and half wild ish, like savannah cats and stuff, but they are way wilder than most dogs we know and so you need a special license for most of them i think
your point about those half wolf dogs you see sometimes is good... idk about the legality of those...
I know a guy who lives in Holland, and his family has this thing that is a mix between a tiger and a lion. Liger i guess. The thing is fucking huge. Its not a house pet though. They have a bunch of other exotic animals too, like zebras, giraffes and hippos. its like a private zoo!
Having a huge cat s a pet would be awesome though, i'd train that thing to climb around my apartment building and steal other peoples stuff from their balconies.

My aunt had a cat that got really sick so she had to give it steroids, it ended up being 45 lbs and massive and it ran away. It would keep leaving presents on her doorstep every once in a while though but instead of the regular mouse or bird the massive cat would leave full grown raccoons and groundhogs and once a small turkey.

My fricken 10 lb cat brought back a 3.5' long snake, a squirrel, and somehow a hummingbird.
savannah cats. They are domestic and huge. basically a half jungle cat half house cat, but just as legal as any regular cat. Probably the closest thing to what OP is looking for
Big cats like to prey on the smaller organisms of other species so they would be patrollin the neighbourhood eating small children, which I could see being a small problem

FunkadelicMy parent's Maine Coon is bigger than most small dogs. Still no panther or whatever though.
my friend has one that was big all along but now its super fat and weighs about 30 pounds. its the most gigantic thing i have ever seen and it is awesome. Im a dog person too but I love it.

Well maybe if you are small child, other wise hardly seems like problem, almost an added benefit because you wouldn't have to buy as much food for it

personally i dislike small children, but the police might not be too pleased with your black panther preying on the suburbs.
That said i would club five kittens in order to own my own black panther

My grandma had one of these when I was a kid it would just hop onto your shoulder and such it was pretty neat it was a really nice kitty for being half wild
that was actually really good question. cats even the small ones, were made for one thing and that's killing. cats are also somewhat difficult to domesticate, talking about large ones. after cats get to a certain size they're just going to become dangerous, and no one's going to want them for fear of getting killed Or hurt.
