Why do skaters have free parks

Skate parks don't have to be maintained nearly as much as a snow park. All a skate park may need is the occasional rail waxing. A snow park will need constant daily in order to be kept in good condition. If you want to ski for free, go hit urban.

^What he said, and the fact that building a skatepark is a one time thing while snow needs to be blown or compiled every year to build a terrain park. I'd imagine there's also some incentive for cities to build skateparks to give skateboarders a place to skate instead of the streets as it probably eliminates the damage to rails and ledges in the city even if it doesn't eliminate it. Urban skiing is done by such a low percentage of the population and only when there's snow so it isn't really an issue.

Government/ private funding pays for skateparks to be built one time. So technically it is payed for with taxpayer dollars, individual donations, or sponsor support.

Wanted to post this. Although they do exist, these places need to be kept up, as in jumps being reshaped and rails moved around as snow melts. Plus they take a crew that has to be paid to make snow and set it up each year.

Those cost massive chunk of dough to build. just look at the proposal for the one in sf. I know it is slightly different but they both run into the same problems -- space, cost of materials (a lot more then metal and concrete), and litigation issues

Yeah, the one here in Jerusalem cost about $2.5 million - and that article said "youths" weren't allowed to street skate by the police and thus the park was built. However, I also read elsewhere that those funds could've been spent on more needed things and that it was only built because the parents of skaters were generally all big taxpayers.

If there's one thing both good (and bad) about 2015 it's the age of CCTV - you can skate all you want at the park and if someone wants to steal your shit, they're gonna have to think twice.

Because you don't need a chairlift to get to the top of a skatepark. There are tons of free ski parks, just find a hill and build one.

Ruby Hill is truly amazing to have. I volunteer there because it is what I love to do. Being paid would be great sure but we do get a season pass out of the gig. People like myself are out there willing to put in the time. The biggest part is getting the city to sign off on it.

does your local park have a chairlift? Mine has a rope tow and that isn't even necessary, if i wasn't paying id gladly hike

Without daily upkeep, a free hike park would get crazy icy and no one would hit it. And plus people only like hiking to a certain extent. Personally I would do it all day since I'm from Minnesota and ski crappy parks all the time anyway. I'm entertained with a 10 foot pvc for weeks

Mainly people have to maintain the park or it will turn to shit so they need to pay people to do this job and that's why you pay for it. Basically what everyone else said.
