Skiers in the West now know what the East is like.
The west coast is having a horrible season with next to no snow and meanwhile the east is getting pounded. The ski resort with the most snow in the country right now is a tiny little mountain in northern ME called Camden SnowBowl. In a normal ski season most east coast dream of taking a trip out west to get away from the ice, rain and wind. This year it is the opposite. I know several people who moved east this year to ski.
Actually no, since we in the east don't need much to be skiable and we are ready with snowmaking etc. should we hit a dry year.
The west isn't ready for this shit and they need way more to be skiable at all. They're straight up closing resorts. That is nothing like the EC. Stahp it OP. You're being a dick.
Nope. Its been a nuetral or mild el nino. The issue is an unbreakable ridge of high pressure that only rarely let's a storm under it, and that stormtrack is the infamous PE. Its been in place the last 18 months.
Winters like this are natural disasters out here. Its really not a good thing.

Ya except the difference, OP, is that unlike the east coast; our mountains are SHUTTING down. All Canadian Coastal Mountains (exempt Whistler) are closed with not next to no snow. Literally... NO snow. I'm usually a minimum of 40 days a season. I've been 'blessed' with 5. Nowhere NEAR a usual east coast winter. Temps have been sitting from 5-10 celsius.

Yeah. Like others said. Back east, at least on a mediocre year, you'll still have cold temps and it will still rain so you'll have water. Here, it's bone dry, and resorts are closing left and right. I've had less than 10 days skiing all season. I doubt Ill hit 20 this year even if we have a decent month.
Worse off, California's drought will worsen and persist... the Pacific Northwest won't have enough water to run their hydroelectric plants, and the amount of money lost by resorts and communities due to lack of snow that they depend on is obliterating the economy. Ski shops are closing up for good, stores can't get enough tourist business to run.. employees are being laid off and forced to move away. This doesn't happen to this degree even on the worst east coast year.
The struggle out here is real, and you guys have no idea how bad it is, nor how bad it has been - it's been 4 years for me since I had a real winter. Four. During my physical prime. Garbage.

My avy 1 course in two weeks just got cancelled because we have no snow...
It really is awful.. Park city's super park hasn't even opened and the only reason it will open is because of the Grand Prix.. They didn't even make the snow for the jumps, they had to bring it over from another part of the mountain

We're still at 78% of our usual snowpack and we're doing extremely better than the rest of the west. Just because one state in the western half of the United States is doing better than the rest doesn't mean that this season hasn't been shit for the West
Yeah the total snowfall has been shit compared to recent years but it's been aight in comparison to what we normally experienced in NH. Kind of wish I had been in Boston getting it the past few weeks though

Yeah I moved from Ontario to Nelson BC for school, expecting some steep and deep pow days at Whitewater. Started off as what I would call a good "east coast" season, then turned into the worst east coast conditions of my life. Yea sure they have fun terrain, but the ice coast conditions makes that terrain barely ridable and not fun at all. They also have 0 snow making, bad grooming and a crappy terrain park making for probably one of the worst seasons of my life. and thats for someone who skied a small 300ft hill his whole life. and of what I hear Whitewater has one of the best bases out of all of BC which is pretty shitty and a lot of places are closing and have closed it's pretty rough out here. :( Basically I learned that the majority of BC is only good for pow skiing and when they have a bad season, it's bad. Hopefully I can come back and experience a good season here cause the terrain is sick!
LampardMontana's having the shittiest winter on record, but it's still about 10 fold better than any good season I have ever had growing up out east.
Bullshit. Montana's been having a halfway okay season. I've seen far worse up there. It's definitely one of the better-off ski regions in the west... Same with Jackson and Targhee.

Yeah. I left Oregon right in the nick of time - before the ski areas I could have worked with would be closed for multiple years running.

Minnesota is freakin where it's at though! Nothing beats shoveling 1/2" of snow for an hour to build a lip to a handrail with bone dry stairs. after that you rig up your bungee only to find out that it froze in the -15F temps while you were shoveling and has absolutely no elasticity.

Steamboat just had an exceptional weekend of pow. We may not have had our usual snowfall but I consider myself lucky compared to most other resorts in the west. Every run/lift is open and we have a full park setup (though it is pretty lame, but that is normal for steamboat).

This. As someone who just moved west after having grown up on the east coast (probably going to end up on the east coast eventually), I'll say that it is easily much worse than a normal east coast season. Resorts are already closing down here in WA, and it seems like I'll probably end the season somewhere between 10 and 20 days.
It's been torture getting pictures from people back home of the unbelievable amount of snow while it's 55 degrees here in the middle of February.

And the east coast is COLDER. When I lived in Tahoe I never bothered bringing ski boots in from the car at night. Don't make that mistake on the east coast.
I live up near alaska where it should be -30 celcius right now. know what it is? 10 fucking degrees celcius. hoodie laps yesterday and my back yard park has melted. FUCK THIS
Those snowfall percentages are from the summit snowfall gauges. Its ONLY the very top of the mountains that have snow. There is a distinct snow line at around 5000 feet depending. Most resort bases in the cascades are around 3000-4000, and the top is around 5-6000. It has rained to the top of every mountain during every storm event so far this year.
Considering how bad it is in the home state of WA I'm pretty happy with the amount of coverage we still have in Utah. And yesterday was sick. Besides I'd rather ski ice on a mountain than pow on a 300 foot hill.
Now find some data for these areas but with average temp over last two months. No matter how much snow you get if its above freezing that shit is going to melt.
That's the case in UT. We just had 1 month + of blistering temps, so despite a some what average year in regards to snowfall, the stuffs all melted.
